There was a time when you simply could not beat a Briggs & Stratton mower. They built the most dependable motors on the market. The same cannot be said today. In the last few years I have bought 3 B&S mowers, 2 new & 1 used, the latest being a new 475 Series. I think of myself as fairly traditional but I will be breaking tradition with my next mower purchase. B&S has not made a reliable mower in many years. They redesigned the motors to include an automatic throttle system which simply does not function properly. They also will not stand the test of time in general. My first B&S mower was handed down to me by my great grandfather and served me until it was stolen eight years later. (I was 18 when I received it and I never saw my Papaw use any other mower!) The last one lasted one and a half mowing seasons. I understand that nothing lasts forever but I think this is a severely drastic difference in performance and durability.
