Breastfeeding Opinion —

I'm the mother of 4.  I tried breastfeeding all 4 of my babies, It just never worked very well for me.  I'm not sure why?  Maybe I have wierd nipples.  They don't seem wierd. Sometimes a baby's tongue is short.  My son's tongue had to be clipped.  Maybe this also had something to do with it.  Bottles worked very well for me.  I was still able to bond well with my babies.  I never believed in the propping the bottle method.  I always held my babies close to me and watched them eat.  I feel it was as rewarding looking into their little eyes while they nursed on a bottle.  Nothing like looking into a babies eyes.  They just hold that gaze.  Who could look away from that?

For both of you... I just want to offer hugs because you tried. Breastfeeding is best but no one ever said it was easy (and no one told me how hard it was either, that's for sure). As a working mom of two, I found it hard both times because my milk came in late. I had to supplement early on with my first because she was not getting enough and her lips became cracked and painful, so much so that it hurt her to latch on. Later I learned she may have been dehydrated. With my second, I never realized how little breastmilk she must have been getting. She wound up getting severly dehydrated within a week with really bad jaundice and was hospitalized for phototherapy for 3 days. I didn't give up nursing her, but it's evident that my milk tends to come in late so I had to work extra hard and nurse longer. My current baby currently takes the breast well, but she has formula as well. There is no shame in that. Some women have it relatively easy when nursing. I am not one of those women, but at least I tried. At least you both did too.

I tried and failed too. With my first one I had a breast feeding expert help me with the latching on and all but she for got to mention the life saving powers of lanolin! With my 2nd one I was all set and ready to go with my lanolin and knowledge of what to do...that was until my colostrum ran out and I had to supplement with a bottle for 3 days till my milk came in, by that time she would no longer latch on to me.
