I've had 2 babies, and I planned to breastfeed both of them. Needless to say, the best laid plans...blah blah blah. I used to dream about sitting in a rocking chair, breastfeeding my baby, so imagine my bitter surprise when my first baby would NOT nurse. She would arch her back and try to get away from me! Okay, my breasts were rather zepplin-like, and yeah, they were bigger than her head, but come on! They weren't THAT scary. And they had food! What baby doesn't want food? Well...mine. LOL I was so disappointed that she wouldn't nurse, but I did the second best thing...I pumped. For 10 MONTHS with an Avent Isis manual pump. Yeah, it was a hassle, and yeah it took alot of time, and yeah, it wasn't always easy to find a good place to whip out my boobs in peace. But it was totally worth it, IMO. I had the best food, made especially for my baby, on hand, and it's so much cheaper than formula, it's not even funny! My first daughter hasn't been sick very much at all, and she's in the 75th %ile for height and weight.

My second daughter tried like heck to nurse, but the pain was just too much for me. I suppose she wasn't latching on right, but I never could get her to do it without intense pain. So I said to myself, "I've done it before...I can do it again!" The first time I pumped after she tried to nurse, the milk came out orange from the blood mixed in it from my bleeding nipples. Ugh! I dumped it out. I did have formula on hand at all times with both babies, but I rarely needed it. I got to the point that I could get ALOT of milk at one time. My all-time record is 18 ounces in one pumping. I only got to give her breastmilk for 5 months, because I dried up, for some reason. Not really sure why. Stress, I think. And she got RSV when she was 3 months old. In any case, I did the best I could with both of them, and it was very rewarding for me. And, as a bonus, I got to the point where I didn't care who saw me with my shirt open. LOL In the big scheme of things, having someone see your boobs while you pump milk for your baby is waaaay down on the list of upsets. ;-)
