My husband is an avid tea drinker (mostly iced) and I love the occasional pot of Earl Grey. As such, my search for the perfect water-boiler/tea maker was to satisfy several needs. Namely; quickly and easily brew up to a gallon of tea a day, not make a mess, and not burn any pans (or the house).
First we used the Mr. Coffee iced tea maker, which we ended up going thru 2 sets because of inherant flaws: the plastic carafes eventually crack from the spout down and ill-fitting components inevitably lead to spilled tea/water.
Then there was iced tea the old-fashioned way: boil tea bags in the saucepan. Forgetting to set the timer and/or not hearing it have led to 2 ruined pans, stinking up the kitchen, and a fear of burning the house down.
This prompted the search for a kettle that would boil water and automatically shut off. After alot of reading and comparing I looked for a few key features:
1. Auto shut-off after reaching a boil (not when empty- many shut off only as a boil-dry safety feature)
2. Unexposed heating element, and a non-aluminum cover for the heating element.
3. Lighted on-off indicator.
4. Water level view window.
The Braun WK200W Electric Water Kettle meets all of these requirements and more.
It has a corded base unit that allows you to carry the kettle for filling and pouring. The auto shut off turns the kettle off after the water boils, or if you lift it off the base. The on-off switch is ingeniously at the top of the handle, so you don't have to fumble with the base unit. The kettle has a marked water level view window and on-off indicator light on both sides of the kettle so it's not only for right-handed people. A button opens the lid, which can be opened wider manually. However you don't have to open the lid to fill the kettle as the spout is big enough to easily fill it that way. The kettle boils water very fast, faster than a pot on the stove. It boils for a bit (haven't timed it, maybe 5-10 seconds?) then shuts off. The pour spout is fantastic and you can pour fast without any dribbles or splashes.
The real beauty for me is that I am brewing tea in the kettle! I fill the kettle to 5-6 cup level, add 3 family size tea bags and press the on button. 5 minutes later I have a pot of very strong tea which I pour into my gallon carafe, add 1/3 cup sugar and cold water to fill, and voila: no mess no fuss very fast iced tea.
I have been doing this since I bought the kettle (one month as of this writing), and so far no staining or discoloration inside the pot with the exception of the filter screen under the inside of the spout (designed to filter hard water chemicals). That filter screen is removable so I figure if desired I can bleach it. The cord can be wound and stored in the base unit, and 3 cord openings on base allow partial winding if you have a very close outlet and don't need all the cord length.
I am absolutely thrilled with this water kettle and recommend it very highly.
