Braun Universal Gold Screen Coffee Filter — 

In a burst of enthusiasm and desire to do a little extra something for the environment (and save money as well) I ordered a Braun Universal Gold Screen Coffee Filter from Gevalia shortly after I signed up for their automatic shipment program.  Upon opening it, I was impressed but thought that it would be difficult to clean.  (I still wash dishes the old-fashioned way and I'll admit it, I'm not what you would call a Domestic Diva.)  So the environment had to suffer a little longer as I cheated and went on using paper filters.

I've got to admit though that the Braun Universal Gold Screen Coffee Filter has worked out well and is not difficult to clean after all once you get the "knack" of it.  (Secret:  After emptying most of the grounds out into the garbage or disposal, rinse filter in an upside-down position -- pointed tip up -- with hot water.)  The Braun Universal Gold Screen Coffee Filter's reusability ended up being a bargain for both me and the environment and I was finally able to stop ordering paper filters with my shipments from Gevalia.

Here's a little secret for you and Telpher and anyone else who may try this at least partly because of my review -- the secret in cleaning it is you dump as many of the ground as you can out in the garbage, then turn the filter upside down (pointed tip up) and run hot water over it as hard as you can. The water coming in through what is really the back of the filter washes leftover grounds away really fast. It doesn't work as well if you try to run the water INTO it with the pointed tip down. I just mention this as I hate to think of someone having a problem with it like I did at first. Hope you are having a nice day!

To tell you the truth, even with the gold screen thing here, sometimes that's what I do too. I ended up with extra paper filters on hand and it's just plain easier. Hence the four-star rating on what was really a pretty good idea and well made. Hey, George, have you ever seen a movie called "The Still of the Night"? I used to be very partial to Roy Scheider even though he DIDN'T KNOW I EXISTED!!! I thought that was a pretty good scary movie though.

I just like taking out a paper cup element and flinging the nasties in the trash. We have septic system that is not friendly to coffee grounds.

I think they are easy to clean but then again I have rebuilt carburetors before so cleaning mesh comes more natural for me. I love mine and use it all the time, even for brewing tea! Glad you started using it and hope you enjoy it for many years to come! ;)
