Bradenton —

Bradenton: an excellent weekend getaway!

Unless you're a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, or have flown into Sarasota, you may not have heard of Bradenton.  Situated where the broad Manatee River runs toward Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico beyond, the greater Bradenton area is surrounded by water.   (Anna Maria Island is the barrier island to the west of town; its southern end links to Longboat Key, off Sarasota).

Museum-goers and history fans have lots to explore and discover in Bradenton.   A Spanish explorer named DeSoto set foor on Florida in 1539 at this very spot;  a national park and several area exhibits describe his amazing journey.  Emerson Point, an archeologically significant site with one of the largest Indian mounds in Florida, is just across the river and well worth a visit.  Bike, paddle or fish there.

Bradenton's South Florida Museum is, simply, stunning in its breadth of topic, and quality of displays.   Covering natural, cultural and regional history, the museum shares its handsome downtown site with the Bishop Planetarium and Parker Manatee Aquarium.   Visit Snooty, a 60-year-old manatee which is so beloved by the city, hundreds turned out for his birthday party.

The Maritime Museum at Cortez - in the historic fishing village of Cortez on Bradenton's west end - aptly shows and tells how Cuban fishermen, native Americans and runaway slaves worked together in the fishing industry. It still thrives today, as a trip to Star Fish Seafood Company in Cortez will attest.  (Take home fresh catch or sit and eat some of the best fried seafood in Florida).

Bradenton has a charming arts district, called Village of the Arts.  This collection of quirky, colorful cottages - several city blocks - is home to an amazing variety of art studios, galleries, bookstores, cafes and boutiques.   Manatee Players is the city's 60-year-old professional theater company; enjoy a show and watch for the opening of a new riverfront theater.

Fishing, paddling, biking, and hanging out on Anna Maria Island's beautiful beaches are all a big part of the Bradenton lifestyle.   And nearby Sarasota offers a wealth of other cultural opportunities.  (For a great place to stay, see my review on The Londoner B&B in downtown Sarasota).   Mattison's is a hot-spot bar and restaurant within walking distance, and right on the river.

Sarasota-Bradenton's SRQ airport has one or two major airlines flying in, but Tampa's TPA is just a 30-minute drive (across the gorgeous Skyway bridge).   Discover Bradenton, a relaxing, low-key Florida getaway, with a lot to offer.

The Bottom Line:  Libby Likes It!

You're right - I hadn't heard of it, but I'm so glad I read your review. I'm always looking for places within Florida to take my folks to that are just a day or so away from the Tampa Bay area - this is perfect.
