The Boxer breed is a great dog. This breed is highly intelligent. They learn obedience very quickly, much faster than most breeds; Shepherds, Labradors, Aussies, and Border Collies. One thing though, they also can be quite stubborn.
I am a dog trainer and I started seeing Boxers come through my obedience classes about five years ago. Right away, I noticed how smart they are, but also how stubborn they are as well. You can tell just by watching them, that they know what they are supposed to do, they can do it, but they wil test their owners, to see just how much they are going to get away with.
This breed demands an owner/handler that is going to be a strict Alpha personality. If you give this dog an inch, they will take a mile. When training/working with this dog, you cannot back down. If you tell the dog to do something, he MUST be made to do it, otherwise you will soon have an non-obedience problem on your hands. If this happens, it is correctable, but will take some time to undo what YOU have previously done. Always remember, training must be done in a humane way. You use corrections NOT punishments. NEVER ever, hit, kick, slap, or punch at a dog. This behavior will only result in an aggressive dog!
I have NOT seen any aggression characteristics in this breed, which is very good, considering the breed has a history as a police dog in Germany from years back.
As a a professional dog trainer, I highly recommend this dog to anyone who wants a good family dog.
