Boston Terrier Dogs —

When choosing a dog it's very important to get a breed that fits your lifestyle. That cute little puppy will grow up fast and have traits related to his or her breed that cannot be changed. That's why I did research before getting a dog and decided that the Boston Terrier was a great choice for me.

My Boston Terrier ''Beethoven'' is playful, affectionate, and easy to care for.  Known for their docile temperament, Boston Terriers want to be everyone's best friend and are sometimes called ''The American Gentleman''. I'm not sure if it's gentlemanly for a dog to lick people, but my dog loves to show his friendliness by giving people a quick kiss on ears or chin!

The Boston Terrier is easily recognized by its markings. They are black and white or sometimes brindle and white, with erect ears, big, expressive eyes, short nose, and often like to ''smile'''.  Their short hair does not shed much and is easy to care for - no clipping or special grooming required. My dog Beethoven weighs 25 pounds which is on the big side for this breed, as most Boston Terriers clock-in closer to 15 pounds.

One trait to be aware of with breed is their sensitivity.  If you raise your voice or are in a bad mood around a Boston Terrier they may feel rejected and go curl-up in the corner. Also, Boston Terriers do not tolerate extreme heat or cold temperatures very well.  Their short snout makes it hard to breath in hot weather conditions and their relatively small paws get cold quickly.

I currently live in an apartment and the Boston Terrier does very well here. He does not need a lot of room and is content lying in his kennel or on a designated corner of the couch. He does need exercise though - my dog gets 3-4 walks every day, which helps keep him in good shape and it burns off lots of energy. All he needs, besides food and water, some hands-on attention and 15 minutes of playing fetch every night.

I recommend Boston Terriers for anyone who is interesting in a smaller dog that is playful, good with children, and does not have a lot of grooming requirements. However, if you want your dog to run with you for miles on end or want a guard dog I would not recommend this breed. Mine gets tired after a 2 mile walk and almost never barks - he would try to make friends with any burglar! But for most people the Boston Terrier makes a great pet and will be a great companion for up to 14 years.

Really interesting review. Good job. I've seen two commercials often with a Boston terrier in them. Welcome.

That's true although mine is sedate a lot because I am. When I get up and run around, he's so excited to DO something!

Jack Russels are very strong-willed - but I like their livliness. Who wants a dog that just lays on the couch?

I have a Jack Russell Terrier and he's my best friend. But he can get snippy when he feels threatened. I think that comes from us not being tough enough on him when he was a puppy. He almost 11 now and not about to change his ways! lol.
