Borat caught my fancy. That's hard to do. Fancies are pretty personal.

If you've been living under a rock or off the radar, then Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was a hot film a few months back. It's out now on DVD and is one that we (spell that I - as in Mom) bought. This is saying something, since I'm a drive by consumer. I normally suck it up and move on. There's always something new under the sun. It's rare that I invest in mass media. This one - yeah - bought it - watch it from time to time.

The idea here is that Borat visits the U S of A (United States) and attempts to learn about the the culture while sharing the culture of his glorious country - Kazakhstan.

It's all spoof though. The Borat guy is from Britian - the mother ship country. He is ragging hard. He pretends to be from this third world country and has good Americans jumping through all manner of hoops.

There are some cases where the humor gets a tad mean.

Borat visits a southern plantation. Do those exist anymore? I'm from the South. Haven't seen one in action lately. Borat's a bit on the edge in inviting a pseudo prostitute in, but he does make a point that all guests are not created equal in the gentile south.

When he punks the frat boys, it seems rather justice. They trash talk up one side and down the other of the travel camper. If they wouldn't want it printed on the front page of the paper or on a film, they ought not say it or do it. That's some advice my Mom gave me long ago.

Most of the jokes are just poking fun. Some had some fall out. Can't say that I'd feel all that good about that fake fist put on a real person from a poor country or that I'd sleep well at night after punking a TV station and a woman ending up torn to bits and resigning. Hard to believe, though, a little Borat clip was all it took to topple a media personality.

Shortly after this movie, the Borat actor made some crack in the city and got busted in the face by a non-fan. Humor may be safer on air than on the street. The chance you take when you walk the edge.

This is one of my favorite films. I also like frozen pizza, so take that as you will. If I really need a laugh, then I can stick this in and roll on the floor without having to think very deep at all. It's not quite slapstick. I don't go for that. The Three Stooges go over my head or under my radar - depending on your vantage point. Borat - nutty and tongue-in-cheek enough to tickle my fancy.

As far as the kids, hum, this is PG-17 I think. Some nudity including male nudity. Not really sexual. Humor flashes. Some words. Some stuff that will go right over the heads of those under age 21 or so. Your call. I took my mature 16 year old, but I didn't take the 14 year old. That might give a general idea. It really depends on the kid though.

Good stuff CyndiaA. Good response to a couple of posters would be that Cohen is also making fun of himself as he makes fun of others, and the ultimate message is that just because someone is different than you, speaks with an accent, or from a different culture doesn't mean they are an alien from another planet that you have to treat in a unique and special way. AND A lot of Americans are clueless in terms of dealing with anyone from a different culture.

No problem laughing at consequences associated with those things.

Oh yeah Kristy. My kid says that, "Very nice" just like Borat too. I can't nail it. Must be a teen skill.

Did you peek? Really, it's not so bad. Well, the naked fight, you might close your eyes. Mostly it was on target with pranks that highlighted stuff that ought not be.

Some people beg for it. The frat boys were raggin' women big times. They knew a camera was rolling. They ought not get plastered and talk junk if they don't want the world to know. In almost every case, Borat only made fun of fools. He would not have punked you. Trust me. He just nailed folks who had it coming (with a very few exceptions).

In response to Meredith's comment from Oct 26, 2007 at 5:54AM:

I was the "wild child" growing up. I would have found a way to see it. A lot of the teens here were scrambling to do the same. My kid said he really wanted to go. He's very mature and responsible. I took him, and we talked about it later. We did note some of the issues with the film. It's not cool to trick people in third world countries with fake . . . uhm . . . arms. Anyway, I'd much rather go too and talk than have my kid running around with the teen crowd and trying to slip in.

Hehe. I'm the woman on the elevator with the notebook and camera saying, "Can I get a quote?" Oh yeah. She wasn't on the elevator. But, yeah, I'd probably ride all the way up and run after them to find out what the heck's going on.

I can't watch this but I did rent it for my husband who thought it hilarious. Jo

Bob, I can appreciate what you're saying as I tend to feel the same way. Eventually though I did end up seeing the movie and was actually surprised. Underneath all the pranking and stupid humor is some very real social commentary that should make us as Americans stand back and think about our attitudes. So while, I can't say that this is a must see movie, there is actually some redemption in it below all the gross out humor and pranks.

I haven't seen "Borat" and probably won't see it. I absolutely hate being made to look like a fool, and therefore do not like to watch it being done to others. I understand all too well what it's like when it happens to me. I know that some people (such as Sacha Baron Cohen, or whatever his name is) are skilled at this particular type of humor, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I'm generally a pretty funny guy but making fools of people just makes me uncomfortable.

Good review, though!

yeah the naked man scene was an absolute con for me too. i laughed some but then felt a little sad and weird when it was over so it was not one of my favorites at all. you are the coolest mom ever for seeing Borat with your 16 yr. old :)

Kristy wrote on Oct 25, 2007 at 10:10PM

My oldest went and told the twins, "Don't let Mom go, but you HAVE to" LOL
So my husband and I go with another couple and these two highly educated men are just cracking up over the scene where they are both naked and fighting! I mean really cracking up!
In real life, I'm the lady on the Elevator, who is laughing and just hoping it stops on the next floor so I can get off ! But I did like the the driving instructor and loved they caught the college boys and the rodeo moron!
My son can say "Very nice" exactly like he does too funny.
