Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan  —

Like many Saturday Night Live sketch characters that are brilliant and hilarious as 15 minute sketches once a week, but fail to hold up as full length movies,Borat is much funnier in smaller doses. The Borat skits on the Ali G show were some of the funniest parts of that show. However, at feature length, the character becomes tired and annoying quickly.  There were tons of laughs early on the film, but as it wore on, the Borat character became predictable and the laughs few and far between.  The premise was cool and had potential.  Sacha Baron Cohen is a great actor and naturally funny.  His way of pointing out and ridiculing things about American culture was very slick and cool.  There was a great balance of traditonal fish out of water humor, raunchy bathroom humor, and smart ambush reality comedy.  But there was just too much of it at once.  Where the Ali G show left you wanting more of Borat, the movie left you wanting less.

I liked this movie but, like you, I felt it worked better in small doses. The clips I'd caught here and there before actually seeing the whole film were really enough. He's an original, though.

I have such poor taste (-: I laughed and laughed at this one. But, I liked Dodge Ball too. My boys have rubbed off on me I think.
