I didn't want to go overboard on buying baby stuff, and thought the boppy was just one more marketing gimmick that didn't really serve a purpose.  Boy, was I wrong!

I nursed my baby for the first 2 months without it - I used regular pillows, rolled up blankets, whatever was handy.  It worked, but I found myself having a lot of pain in my wrists and arms from holding the baby up, and in my back from having to lean at uncomfortable angles to properly position the baby.  And my preemie baby only weighed about 6lbs at this point!

I decided to give the Boppy a try.  The first couple of times I used it, I was not terribly happy with it.  It didn't seem to give me a whole lot more support than a regular pillow, and it slid around just as much - I was tempted to return it.

Then I had a Eureka moment!  I had been trying to use it positioned in front of me (with the "arms" on either side) like shown in the picture on the cover.  This wasn't working very well.  I tried shifting it so the pillow was on one side of me.  Bingo!  I could set the baby down completely on the pillow (we use the football hold) and use both my hands to help him latch on.  My weight against the "arm" that was behind my back held it in place so there was no sliding.  I could adjust the angle by moving my leg more under the pillow or moving it further away.  I suddenly realized what all those other women were raving about.

My baby is 5 months old now, and we can definitely tell the difference when we're away from home and I'm boppy-less.  You definitely can nurse without the boppy, but once you get used to it, you're not going to want to.
