I read a LOT of children's books and have found many of my favorites in the library. I was wondering if any of you have favorite books from your childhood (ABC, counting, bedtime, board, inspirational, funny, etc.)

If you are currently reading children's books, have you come across any ones that you particularly like?

My favorite childhood books was the Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. It came in a set. I still have them too. I read all the books again last year. Hmm...I feel a review coming on.

I think I read some of those as well when I was younger. I believe my mom still has the set of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books at her house. I just checked out a Judy Blume book for my oldest daughter to try. I remember how much I liked her books.

My favorites were books about magicians, circuses, "Peter Pan", "Little House on the Prairie", "Treasure Island", Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew. Also books about the Impressionist artists, historical figures  photography, drawing & painting, animals, nature, rocks and science facts & crafts. I was very curious and did a lot of reading.

A group of my friends would read the same books and we'd have fun acting them out, going on adventures.

As a child I read the series of books called the "Box Car Children."  I recently bought them for my granddaughter to read.

You guys are posting some interesting books and series! How nice to pass down those favorites to future generations. Having a book club where you talk about or act out the stories sounds like fun (and a real incentive to make sure to read the book!).

My girls have asked for me to check out Strega Nona several times at the library and they even did a puppet show of that a few years back and my 7-year-old STILL remembers it! I'll have to see if they have Diary of a Wimpy Kid--sounds really funny.

I read some of the Bobbsey Twins books too--that may be another collection at my Mom's house.

I remember being excited to wait at the dentist and doctor's office because I could look at the Highlights magazines. I always wanted to find the hidden pictures.

Probably my most read books were the Laura Ingalls Wilder books = this was way before the TV show (in the 60's).  I had the whole set & I read them many times.

Sounds like a lot of us were reading quite a few of the same books!

My kids have been enjoying some books that have been around for a while like:

  • The Foot Book (and other Dr. Suess books)
  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
  • Goodnight Moon
  • Snow White
  • Cinderella
  • The Little Mermaid

They've also been enjoying some newer ones like:

  • Love You Forever (very cute but I ended up crying the first couple of times I read this one!)
  • Rosemary Wells books (Max and Ruby)
  • Falling for Rapunzel (and some other really funny ones by the same author that put a twist on the older fairy tales)
  • Minerva Louise books (I like these because they are SHORT!)
  • Junie B. Jones books (chapter books)
  • Eric Carle books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • Everyone Poops (thanks to CyndiA, who introduced me to this one--she has boys!)

These are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head that are mainly for the preschoolers, except for Junie B. Jones (fair warning to parents out there--my preschooler decided to become a beauty shop guy after I read the one about Junie B. trying her hand at cutting hair--she not only cut her own hair but cut off all the baby's curls)

For very young children (toddlers), my favorites would be the series of board books by Sandra Boynton which includes "Moo Baa La La La".

My favorite books were at first the Bobsey(sp? Twins. Then to Nancy Drew. But my second favorite children's books were the ones about collies - "Lad A Dog etc. by Albert Payson Terhune. My all time favorite books were The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley. I still have a set today. I read them all at least once a year. It's my "guilty pleasure".

I love "The Velveteen Rabbit." My father also got me this book called "Wilma and the Water Pistol That Wouldn't Shoot Straight" because he thought the little girl had my personality. I have only seen that one used.

When I was little, there was a whole series called "Serendipity" that came out in 1974 (OK, I guess it came out before I was born...whew!)  They're short little stories about animals or fantasy creatures that always ended with a 4-line poem about the moral of the story.  Some of the themes were about friendship, accepting people with disabilities, being brave, and helping the environment.  The artwork was beautiful (done by Robin James), and they were so well-written (by stephen Cosgrove).  I still have a few and would love to get the whole collection for my kids, but I think they're out of print.

After that, in no particular order:

  • The Little House series
  • Nancy Drew series
  • The Phantom Tollbooth
  • The Chronicles of Narnia

Thanks for all of the ideas, you guys! Our school just had a book fair and my 5-year-old was so excited that she was jumping up and down because she got to buy two books when I picked her up. (We have a house FULL of books, but I guess there's nothing like a new one that you get to pick out on your own!)

Even though I haven't heard of this when I was a child, I just discovered The "Ramona Collection" by Beverly Cleary which has a total of 8 books in the series. It is wholesome and very entertaining. Reading it brought me back to my childhood. :)

There's was a book I liked when I was a kid called Spot.. something. A picture book which you lift tabs and see where spot was hiding.

Any cute kids Halloween or Fall books that you guys have read?

My favorites are "Corduroy", "B.F.G", "Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" and "Tikki Tikki Tembo." All of these stories were fun and interesting, that is the only reason I remember them. They all had a lessen to be learned.

I use to have trouble reading. In third grade I was behind most other students. Once, I came across these books I wanted to learn how to read so I could finish each story. By the the end of third grade I jumped ahead a garde and a half in my reading level. These books triggered that success.

Great story about how books that interested you inspired you to learn to read!
