I get seasick. I also can get a queasy feeling on airplanes. I asked my doctor what motion sickness pill he would recommend for me. Dramamine is the one that everyone knows. He recommended Bonine. I’ve been taking it for years.
I always buy the package of 16 for about $7.00. You can buy a package of 8 but the expiration dates are really good. The box I have now expires in May 2008.
I like Bonine because I can chew them. I can’t say they taste like raspberries but they taste good.
One or two should be taken an hour before travel for adults and children over 12. We are told on the package that this works “up to 4 times longer and causes less drowsiness than Original Dramamine.”
I’ll tell you how I take it. Since I am on other medication that can make me sleepy I only take ½. I find that Bonine works fine this way. For example on our cruise last winter every morning I would chew ½ of a Bonine. They have a slit down the center so they are very easy to break. Bonine worked like a charm and I was fine. However there were a couple of rough days so I just took another ½ in the evening and was good to go. This amount didn’t make me at all sleepy.
In case you want to know what’s in Bonine I’ll give you the ingredients:
Active Ingredients: Meclizine HCl (25mg)
Inactive Ingredients: FD&C Red 40, Lactose, Magnesium Stearate, Purified Siliceous Earth, Raspberry Flavor, Saccharin Sodium, Starch, Talc
Bonine comes with warnings so be warned. These come in a blister pack. If any seals are broken don’t take the pill.
Talk with your doctor if you have glaucoma, trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland, a breathing problem such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.
Ask a doctor of pharmacist before use if you are taking sedatives or tranquilizers.
When using this product:
If pregnant or breast feeding, ask a health professional before use.
Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away. (from www.drugstore.com)
I do take medications that can make me drowsy but even with those and ½ of a Bonine I can have a drink. Just one though because medications can triple the effect of alcohol and vice versa.
We are going on another cruise next January and there is no doubt Bonine will be with me.
