A few weeks ago I took my two sons ages seven and eleven to see the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua. During the previews, the movie Bolt was featured and my children were in stitches over it. All they kept saying is how they wanted to see that movie when it came out. I enjoyed it as well and wanted to see it too. We finally got a chance to go see it this weekend and I have to say, it was quite entertaining!
The Plot
The main characters are an adorable white dog named Bolt (voice of John Travolta) and his owner who is a young sweet girl named Penny (voice of Miley Cyrus). It starts with a puppy later named Bolt being adopted from a shelter by Penny. Penny just happens to be an actress in a TV show about a dog who has superpowers and protects her from the "man with the green eye" and his goons. Bolt, being brought up on the movie set of this action TV show truly believes he has superpowers and isn't aware that he and everyone around him are just actors. Bolt is separated from the studio and still believing he has superpowers meets up with a cat named Mr. Mittens and a hilarious hamster named Rhino. Originally thinking that his powers were weakened by Styrofoam packing peanuts, he eventually realizes that he being a superhero was not reality. This journey of self-discovery ends up with Bolt realizing he is indeed a hero even without superpowers.
What we thought about it
This movie starts completely action packed and immediately grabbed our attention. The special effects were fantastic and the animation was top notch. My kids were giggling within the first ten minutes. The love between Bolt and his owner/costar Penny is heartwarming and very apparent throughout the movie. The fun really begins once Bolt runs away from the studio thinking he is on a mission of rescuing Penny. The best part came when Bolt tried to continue to use his superpowers only to end up with a lot of bumps and bruises. Meeting up with Mr. Mittens, the female cat and Rhino, the hamster in a ball makes for a lot of laughs. Our favorite part is where Mr. Mittens tries teaching Bolt how to beg for food. She teaches him how to make adorable faces by tilting his head and looking up with his big eyes. The whole theater was full of laughs during this scene.
My Final Viewpoint
Bolt was full of action, great animation and lots of laughs. My kids really enjoyed it, as did I. The only negative thing I can say about it is that younger children may not be able to pick up the whole concept of the story and may get a little bored here and there. I recommend you "bolting" to the theaters to catch this movie. It's very cute and I'm going with a 4 star rating on this one.
