I am definitely not a big hot dog person or lunch meat person! And, I dont love my kids eating that kind of stuff too often. That is, until I discovered Boars Head. Boars Head products are hands down a million times better tasting than other deli meats. Boars Head is top notch in my book.

Background on Boars Head

I got addicted to the Boars Head deli meats about 6 months ago. I decided that my kids needed to start eating sandwiches at lunch and I needed to stop eating out every day. So, I went to my local grocer and asked for her rec on the best deli meats. She suggested that I try Boars Head. BINGO! I am hooked-- although a little poorer at about $7 per pound. (note: my local international deli sells Boars Head deli meats for $7 per pound but organic/Health food stores also have it for a lot more! So, shop around)

I am a big fan of Boars Head maple Turkey and Italian meats. So, it was a no-brainer that I would eventually venture into trying other Boars Head products- like the bacon (also $8 per pound) and frankfurters.

Now, eating Boars Head Frankfurters for the first time...

A couple of weeks ago I picked up a package of the Boars Head Lite Frankfurters. YUM!!!!!!!!!! They are skinless, low sodium, low calorie, low fat and absolutely delicious. Wow. Low calorie and low sodium delicious. No way!!! But, yes. These hot dogs actually taste like real meat and don't need a single ounce of mustard, ketchup or relish.

The boars head lite frankfurters are about 90 calories each and just a few grams of fat. (6, I think) They are the normal size (a little longer and leaner than a BallPark frank) and they come in packs of 10 for about $5.00. Now, that is definitely more expensive than normal "dogs" , but they are well worth the taste-- especially at 50 cents per hot dog.

In fact, I now dont feel badly giving my kids hot dogs. At first I had sticker shock, but in the grand scheme of things, it is cheaper than taking my family to McDonalds for a meal and a heck of a lot healthier.

If you can swing it, buy the Boars Head products. You feel healthier, they taste better and your body will thank you for it. :)

I've tried these a few times in the past and they were delicious. I think I'm going back to eating the ones without nitates. Otherwise tasty as they can be I'll have to pass it buy.

LOL, Mike said what I was thinking! Eww hot dogs made out of a boar's head! But I have heard of this brand. Don't know if I ever had it. No hotdogs for me after I saw a documentary on what goes in them. I won't go into details. ;)

Did you know that the Boars Head company started up in Wisconsin as a pub style restaurant and then became very upscale? They continue to produce the high quality luncheon meats and sausages for sale to the public even though they don't serve them in the restaurant any longer. Great stuff.

Thanks so much for this review. You're the first person I know who has tried these. Did you know that Peapod carries a line of Boar's Head items and sometimes runs very aggressive sales on them?

These are "featured" at my grocery store, and while we are trying to eat healthier the price was a little scary. Nice to know it's worth the effort.

Oh wow these sound good right now... we are finally getting into the 70 degree territory too, so it might be time to dust-off the BBQ!
