Growing up, there was always an assortment of deli meats in our fridge. Good thing too, because it often spared us my mother's cooking. Don't ask!
Most often our deli meats came from the local neighborhood butcher. I can't remember any brands, but they always tasted fresh and when paired with some seeded rye or sourdough breads they were oh so good. Fresh deli sandwiches were something I learned to love at a very early age.
As an adult I continue to love having deli meat on hand and after trying several different brands, including private store brands, the Xenos have come to prefer Boar's Head brand.
A Current Favorite
Over the years, it seems like Turkey has become one of the most popular (and probably the healthiest) forms of deli meat. And, while I love the taste of turkey breast, sometimes I yearn for the flavors of my youth. Specifically, I long for the spicy bite of Pastrami. Boar's Head understands this longing.
Boar's Head Pastrami seasoned Turkey Breast
I first tasted Boar's Head Pastrami seasoned Turkey Breast a few years ago and it was love at first bite. The low-fat high protein goodness of Boar's Head Turkey Breast with the zing of Pastrami seasoning. Ambrosia! Stacked on some fresh bakery rye or a nice hard roll with either a little mayo or spicy deli mustard and I'm in heaven. No, it's not the pastrami of my youth but it does excite the tastebuds without adding unnecessarily to my guilt.
Don't get me wrong. If I'm sitting in Toojay's Deli in Boca Raton, I'm probably going to cave-in and go for the big overstuffed Pastrami sandwich. But that's only an occasional indulgence. At home Boar's Head Pastrami seasoned Turkey Breast is what I prefer.
Boar's Head claims that their Turkey has only .5 grams of fat per 2oz. serving. This is reassuring but trust me 2ozs. of meat on a man-sized turkey sandwich just won't cut it. More likely it'll be 2-3 times that for a proper sandwich. But still at 1.5 grams of fat for a 6 oz. portion amazes and delights me.
Goodness at a Cost
Boar's Head is not to be confused with the deli-counter specials for $3.99/lb. No, down here in South Florida expect to pay about $8.00/lb. for Boar's Head Turkey. Sure it's a bit heavy on the wallet, but your tastebuds will appreciate it.
My Viewpoint
If you love fresh sliced turkey breast but would love a little extra zing in your sandwich, Boar's Head Pastrami seasoned Turkey Breast, maybe just the thing you're looking for. I recommend it. Enjoy!
