I love the blue and gold macaws. My male will ride on the handle bars of my bike and get angry when I stop for a rest. He gets a joke and laughs out loud. He loves yelling at the trick or treaters and knows to hold it until the door is opened! My female is a rescue who suffered a stroke at the young age of 1.5.  She is happiest without men touching her and hanging out in her outdoor aviary. They are just like people - such varied personalities.

We keep a large dog kennel in the garage for the rare inclement or cold weather and as a bed at night.  We line it with a natural type of pellet cat litter making full cleanings rare. We just scoop weekly and dump it entirely every 4 months.  We keep a peanut toy filled with nuts and provide a healthy diet of Kay Tee Exact Rainbow chunky pellet food as well as lots of fresh fruits and veggies.  NEVER any seed.

Parrots are long lived and many are popular as cage birds.  Care should be exercised however by selecting birds with known histories, since even healthy birds may be carriers of infectious psittacosis also known as parrot fever. When contracted by humans this appears to be flu like. It is very dangerous in pregnancy just like cleaning up after any other pet and their feces. My birds have all been tested and I fared just fine caring for my birds through all my pregnancies.  I consider them a  part of our family and could never get rid of them as some doctors suggest to pregnant cat owners.

Macaws are found in the rain forests of Central and South America as well as in Mexico. Formerly in the Caribbean. Most are associated with forests, especially rain forests, but others prefer woodland or savanna like habitats. The species are named for their gaudy colors, ie the Scarlet, Gold and Blue, and the red and green macaws. In captivity adult macaws can be vicious - I have not experienced this because I have not treated them as pets but rather members of my family. In the wild they will travel in pairs. Large, dark (usually black) beaks and relatively hairless light colored medial facial (facial patch) areas distinguish macaws. Sometimes the facial patch is smaller in some species and limited to a yellow patch around the eyes and a second patch near the base of the beak in the members of the genus Anodorhynchus or Hyacinth Macaw.  It has been documented that a Macaws facial feathers are as unique as a human finger print.  They are also prone to blushing which personally I find amazing.  On numerous accounts my macaws has fallen off a perch or done something silly and their white skin takes on an unmistakable blush of red. They can even become embarrassed they will turn their back to you! They will also preen your hair in a very loving way.  The small old world parrots also known as love birds are so named for their apparent fondness of one another.
