Blue Cross / Blue Shield Review Summary

Health insurance is a must for most families and individuals and Blue Cross/Blue Shield ranks among the most popular health insurance providers in the United States. Reviews of Blue Cross/ Blue Shield, however, are varied and there is an almost equal number of positive and negative points ranging from comments like “The Best Medical Insurance Company Around” to “A Lot of Problems”. Blue Cross/Blue Shield has one positive quality that most can agree: It is a widely accepted health insurance provider, and this is an important consideration for anyone who has health concerns. But on the negative side, Blue Cross/Blue Shield offers weak customer service and inefficient claims processing. Blue Cross/Blue Shield is a very large health insurance operation, but consumers should consider other Insurance Companies before making a final decision.

To those that are in a tough spot with health care; blue cross has been an excellent provider for the cost.  My company recently switched from offering Kaiser, to only offering Blue Cross.  At first I thought this was horrible because my family had a good standing with the Kaiser doctors.  Initially... read full review »

We currently use Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBS of NC) because this is the program offered through my husband's work. I am grateful to have health insurance through his work because I have seen premiums for health insurance not associated with an employer, and the numbers are not pretty...

I have had Blue Cross for years, but never really got sick. Well, this year I have been to many doctors and multiple claims have been a nightmare. My provider was told x-rays would be covered at 60% and then they covered nothing saying the x-rays were taken on an office visit and their limit for a visit is $25 no matter what is done on that visit. They also chose not to process a claim that I paid my deductible towards until after a later claim which they applied my deductible to, resulting in me owing an additional $250 to a provider. Not at all an honest practice and I don't appreciate the runaround... read full review »

Blue Cross/Blue Shield seems to be a really nice insurance company.  Once you start to go to the doctor for illnesses or anything else, they seem to not want to pay what they should.  They have too many conditions on everything.  Prior illnesses have a waiting period that can be up to two years long.  I guess that it is called pre-existing conditons. What happens if someone is bi-polar and really needs to the medication?  How can they make someone wait just because it was there before?  It is not right!!  Some people can't go without going to the doctor and getting the care that is needed... read full review »

We applied for Blue Shield, private pay insurance for my 16 year old daughter in July. It is September and the application has not been accepted. They said they needed medical records from the pediatrician, requested them twice, and finally got them today. But my daughter has since become very sick. She has been suffering with what appears to me to be bronchitis. I called to find out the status of the application and was told that by a customer service rep that by their guidelines they have seven days from the receipt of the medical records to complete the application. I told her about my sick...

My company decided about 2 years ago to switch from and HMO to Blue Cross.  This is the worst insurance I've ever had!! They don't pay for ANYTHING, and even when you try to explain why it should be a covered benefit with doctors letters that explain this to them they STILL refuse to pay.  I am in medical debt now because of the contract between my company and this insurance company.  I had a total hysterectomy in December and had internal bleeding and they refuse to pay for $1500 of a part of that surgery even though my doctor submitted papers showing why it was a necessary part of the operation,...

I usually try to be as positive as I can in writing these reviews so as to give people an accurate picture of a service or product. But I feel like to do so now might get in the way of me being completely honest. I have had around three diffirent health insurance carriers in my life, chosen on the basis of the kind of coverage I thought I needed and my desire to not pay monthly for something I never used. The most recent health insurance carrier is Blue Cross/Blue Shield and I have been less than pleased.

Though there is something to say for my wife and I wanting to move on with our lives (getting...

Blue Cross Blue Shield dental insurance treated me in a sneaky and  underhanded manner.  Here's what happened:

A cap on a front tooth fell off, and I accidentally swallowed it.  This happened at night and we were leaving on a cruise the next morning.  It looked bad and would not have been healthy for the tooth to just leave it and go on the cruise.  So I found a late-hours dentist who made me a temporary cap, and I left for the cruise the next morning.  When I returned, I went to my normal dentist to have the permanent cap made.

Blue Cross Blue Shield refused to pay for either the temporary...

I have had Blue Cross less than a year, however I was pregnant when my husband got the coverage. I went through a pregnancy with all the doctor visits, a c-section, and being re-admitted for CHF and I paid $300 of a $30,000 hospital bill!  That is it!  It is cheaper for family coverage than the insurance my employer offers. Also, while I was off on maternity leave, they called ever couple of weeks to see if I needed anything.  They really made me feel like they cared about ME not our money!  They have a nurse line available 24 hours a day and sent me information on it so I could read up on... read full review »

I have dealt with B/C & B/S through my place of work. I have to get prior authorization for medications and procedures. These approvals waste time for the patient and the physicians. Most of the time it is the patient who pays as they either have to wait for an approval from the insurance review team, do a different procedure that the review team feels is adequate or try medications that they feel is the best choice. This takes away from the doctors expertise. Thanks for listening, jillern57@yahoo.com

I have had Blue Cross for years and never had a problem, actually I never gave insurance a second thought until 7/29/2005. I had a massive injury with multiple injuries that required 10 months of therapy, nerve blocks and finally extensive surgery. Blue Cross took care of everything for me, from meds to follow up appoints. They were great and I would reccomend this insurance company to anyone.

Sincerely,

Peggy Scott

BCBS is one of the better insurances, but they do need to concider that some of the copay requirements are not best for those who need to budget their scripts, our copay for non-generics is 30% of cost - minimum $20 - maximum $50 - it is very hard to budget for scripts and this indisive copay rate.

I have gone alomst through all isurances but was always recomended to look for Blue Cross programs, i am a mother and a wife who has like everyone elses extremly strick bugets that can only sonetines go as far as feeding my family.Blue Cross though talks much about programs and plans for families like ours who make a little more than the requirements for help but when the time comes to the actual aid i am very dissappointed to find out how truly expensive they really are.I mean they were my last hope. They also make putting in an application extremly comlicated and you dont hear from anyone anytime... read full review »
