Blue Cross Blue Shield dental insurance treated me in a sneaky and underhanded manner. Here's what happened:
A cap on a front tooth fell off, and I accidentally swallowed it. This happened at night and we were leaving on a cruise the next morning. It looked bad and would not have been healthy for the tooth to just leave it and go on the cruise. So I found a late-hours dentist who made me a temporary cap, and I left for the cruise the next morning. When I returned, I went to my normal dentist to have the permanent cap made.
Blue Cross Blue Shield refused to pay for either the temporary or the permanent cap. They said the tooth was fractured, and that the dentist should have just left it alone or yanked it out. Keep in mind that the insurance company never saw me personally; they just came to this decision based on an x-ray. My dentist contended that the mark on the x-ray was NOT a fracture. I involved our state attorney general, the state dept. of insurance, and a health advocate to help me. Blue Cross Blue Shield agreed that I could go to a third party dentist to have him examine the tooth. That dentist said there was no fracture there, and he felt that the insurance company just didn't want to pay a claim.
The insurance company finally sent a very small check to the first dentist and then told me that if I asked the dentist to return the check, that they would reconsider my case. I did so. Then the company told me they had no intention of reconsidering my case, and what's more they were keeping the check! Talk about sneaky and underhanded! At this point, I still have nothing from them!
