Blue Cross / Blue Shield —

We applied for Blue Shield, private pay insurance for my 16 year old daughter in July. It is September and the application has not been accepted. They said they needed medical records from the pediatrician, requested them twice, and finally got them today. But my daughter has since become very sick. She has been suffering with what appears to me to be bronchitis. I called to find out the status of the application and was told that by a customer service rep that by their guidelines they have seven days from the receipt of the medical records to complete the application. I told her about my sick child and asked if the application could be expedited. I was told that not even the CEO of Blue Shield can expedite an application; they have seven days to complete it. She said she would note the circumstances in the file for the underwriter, but that they still have seven days. Sheesh! And then she tells me they won't even call me so that I can take her right away. I guess I'm supposed to call them repeatedly over the next seven days in between praying that what I believe to be bronchitis isn't in fact the swine flu that I am delaying treatment for. This is incredible...I can get auto insurance over the phone in less than an hour, I can insure my home in the same amount of time...but where lives are on the line there seems to be an aweful lot of blue tape to go through. Reading other reviews and based on my own personal experience I think Blue Shield was a bad choice. Maybe paying a little more will be worth it in the long run. I guess I still have seven days to change my mind.
