Blockbuster Online —

The message I sent them after reading their  new policies and pricing

To the management of Blockbuster, I think it's terrible that you are charging $22 for me to keep my plan the same as it has been. I only switched to blockbuster from netflix because of the unlimited in store exchanges. Netflix's shipping is twice as fast as yours and I've had nothing but trouble getting this company to send my movies in a timely manner which if you have a record of my account you will see if you persist with this change I see no reason not to switch back to netflix or some other movie rental site. I'm sure you going to have many people switching as your new plans are ridiculous. It's hard enough that I have to drive 15min each way even to get to a blockbuster store even though I live 3min from one of the biggest shopping areas in the country. I feel that soon you'll have no stores left and you'll be charging for in store rentals that no one can ever use! I feel you should go back to the old plans immediately if you want to stay in business! Thanks for contacting

This is the reply I received!

BLOCKBUSTER Online Customer Care. I'm sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Like all retail businesses, we must periodically review our products and services structure. In introducing a wider range of subscription plans, we considered a number of factors related to online memberships including in-store activity on a given account. We’re giving our most frequent renters like yourself the option of either continuing with limited in-store exchanges at a the same price point or moving to a new plan if you'd like to continue your unlimited exchanges and agree to a higher price point. Unfortunately, eCoupons are no longer available. We feel we are still delivering a great consumer value and encourage you continue with the new terms or consider one of the new plans we offer. You can find the details of other plans that are available via "My Account" in the "Subscription Plan" area. If you make no changes online or we don't hear from you, please remember that the changes mentioned will take effect on your regular monthly billing date following August 30th, 2007. Thank you very much for your inquiry.

What lovely and helpful form letter don't you think!

I'm leaving blockbuster as soon as the new pricing takes affect at the end of this month! I've already signed back up at Netflix and I'm excited about the movie downloads you get an hour for every dollar your plan costs. Since I'm on the $14 a month two movies at a time plan that's 14 hours of movies. On the same plan at blockbuster you now only get three in store exchanges a month and no ecoupon (that means no more free video game rentals) so at best you only get 5-6 hours of movie time if you get average length movies. Plus no more long trips to blockbuster. I recommend that if you can't decide which between the two go with netflix I've had both and before the blockbuster policy change I would have recommended them despite the slower shipping and poor customer service because of the unlimited exchanges and ecoupons but without them it's not worth all the hassle and extra costs.

BlockBuster denies throttling online customers. But on my own experience, having only available movies at the top of the queue, I've discovered recently that they do full throttling and shamelessly at that. So they mislead customers saying "unlimited" plan. They on purpose limit quantity of movies one can rent. With their recent policy changes - it doesn't make any sense to visit a store anymore. After trying both I'm going back to Netflix.

I am so upset @ the way that Blockbuster treated me. I have been a customer since 1991. One day I was walking into a store to make a online exchanges when they said to me that they no longer do exchanges. That was a total white face lie. I have contacted them but to no avail, they have no interested in keeping me as a customer. The best way that we can let people know of our dissatisfaction with Blockbuster is through word of mouth. We need to let our friends and family members know what they have done to us as customers. The CEO has said that they have purged the tree with customers like me and I'm sure like many millions of others. Blockbuster has lost 1.5 million customers since there own CEO decided that we as customers don't count for anything.
I have left Blockbuster and I have started a blog on the net to make people aware of Blockbuster practices. To the other customers that feel like me, you should look into NetFlix or Wallmart or even some of the stores that have those machines for a dollar.
