Blackberry 8830 World Phone —

This is an outstanding and stable phone and is available in the US from Sprint and from Verizon.  It's lightweight, dependable, full of useful features, attractive, and easy to use.

I was looking for a new handheld for business use, and this phone caught my eye.  I support 100 users of various mobile devices, and have had plenty of experience with Blackberry, Palm, and various Windows devices.  I wanted something that was going to be stable and useful without being bulky or difficult to use.  After some careful research I decided to go with the Blackberry 8830.  My company didn't have a Blackberry Enterprise Server, but it's free to license 1 user and install the server software so I just set one up on an old decommissioned server.  It was easy to set up and has worked flawlessly for me.  I may try to get approval to move my Blackberry users to the server to offer them the features that I have available.

This phone is essentially the same as the Blackberry 8800, but is for use in CDMA networks with a slot for a SIM card for international roaming.  I use Verizon, so I have the Verizon version.  The primary difference between the Verizon version and the Sprint version is that the Verizon version has the built in GPS reciever disabled, and the Sprint version does not.  This might be an important selling point if you plan on using GPS features and don't want to use Verizon's $10 per month VZNavigator for GPS navigation.

The tethering feature is easy to use and works good and fast.  I use it regularly to access my network for troubleshooting and maintenance when I'm not at home or at the office.  The pre-installed web browser is lacking a bit, but Opera makes an excellent free browser that is easily downloaded and installed.

Pros: Easy to use, great software included and plenty available for download, flawless performance

Cons: Disabled GPS with Verizon, battery cover is difficult to remove and breaks easily, a bit awkward to use as a phone without a headset, but most usable phones of this type are, pre-installed web browser is lacking but is easily replaced, no camera but I've found that I don't miss that at all.

Overall, I have to say this is a great phone, but be careful with that battery cover.
