Black & Decker Slimline SpaceSaver Can Opener with Clock Timer Review

I have very limited counter space so I am always looking for ways to maximize my space.  My last can opener although not very big, still took up valuable counter space.  I began my search for an under the counter can opener and found what I thought was the answer to my problem. Our appliances are black and I was thrilled to find a name brand can opener to match. They also sell this can opener is classic white.

According to the manufacturer, this features of this can opener are as follows:

• Opens cans of all sizes; built-in knife sharpener included
• Mounts under cabinet: 9 inches wide, 3-1/4 inches high, 6 inches deep
• Battery-operated digital clock with cooking timer on opener's cover
• Cover pulls down for can-opening, closes for viewing clock, timer
• Removable cutter dishwasher-safe

My Experience 

When I got this can opener home, the box contained easy to follow mounting directions and it went under the counter in a snap. It looked pretty sharp but a little on the chinsy side.  Although it looked that way, I was hoping that being a Black & Decker product, I would be satisfied with my purchase but unfortunately was not.

The cover on this can opener closes to save even more space and displays only the clock and timer which I thought was a clever idea.  A clever idea, until the cover kept popping open on it's own after owning it for about three months.  The clock and timer stopped working after about four months and although I assume it is the battery, it is very difficult to get behind the can opener to replace it.  The removable cutter, sure is removable.  Half the time after I open a can, the cutter comes off with the top of the can and has to be replaced.   

The can opener does open cans of various sizes with ease but there seems to be a lot of spillage that gets caught in the open cover which is an annoyance to clean.  The built in knife sharpener is good to have but I rarely use it.

Pricing & Final Thoughts

This can opener can be purchased online for $29.99 right now but I can only find it in white.  I would only recommend this product if it could be found for about $9.99.  It's not worth much more than that.  I can only give this can opener a 2 star rating.
