So, first of all, I have never considered myself a very mechanically inclined woman. I always let my husband complete the home repairs because I just didn't know how to (nor did I care to) complete these jobs. However, when I was setting up my business, I needed to get some repairs done while my husband was at work. Therefore, I was stuck and needed to ask him to show me how to use a drill. His drills were all pretty large and difficult to handle for a beginner like me. I practiced a few times at home, then prepared to bring the drill to my business to get the jobs done myself. Because the drill was so large and fast, and I didn't quite have the control to use it well, I stripped a lot of screws and made a lot of holes in the wall. My husband suggested that I go to the hardware depot and find a drill that I could handle.
I was slightly offended by the idea that I needed a lighter, "easier" drill, but I had no choice. So, I asked the man at the service desk for his input. He pointed out the Black & Decker 12V Cordless Compact Drill. It was smaller than my husband's drills, which were all between 12V and 18V, but the man at the store assured me that it would give me the power I needed. It cost me about $40, and it came with a carrying case, 20 assorted screw driver and drill bits and a battery charger.
Once I got it to my shop and waited for it to charge up, I jumped right into to the jobs I had to complete. To my excitement (and pride), I found this drill so easy to handle that I was able to finish easily. The drill has speed settings, so I could use a slower setting to get the hang of things without mangling screws, over-screwing, splitting the wood or puncturing the wall. Even the higher settings gave me the kind of control that I needed.
Overall, I would highly recommend this drill to someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with drills, but needs one. I feel pretty confident in my handy(wom)man skills now. If there is a job I know I can handle at home, I get it done myself instead of waiting for my husband to do it. (I can also get him to do more errands and chores done around the house now!) The Black & Decker 12V Cordless Compact Drill is a really reliable drill, and I am glad it has helped me become more handy and capable.
