Most of you read my reviews on all the roofing I had done here recently. I replaced the shingles on my roof, the roof vents and the plumbing vents. It was a large job and kept me pretty busy for a week. Yet the job is just now finally over, I also had to re-coat the roof on our addition in the back. Mother Nature has not been kind to us for quite sometime and the coating I used needed 48 hours with no rain. Well today I finally was able to get the last coat on the addition.....It took over a month to accomplish but it is finally completed!! Sure I am slow but I am good....lol

Black Jack Roof Gard - 7 year White Elastometric Roof Coating

First let me tell you that my addition has an almost flat roof so shingles were not an option on it. The roof shingles do overlap the first 12" of the addition(this piece is a wide roll shingle) but the rest was coated with some sort of white coating but it had developed pits in it and I had to re-nail part of it and seal them before I could re-coat the roof.

According to my square footage on the roof I needed between 1 and 2 five gallon buckets of roof coating. They base it loosely because how much you need will depend on how porous the roof is. Mine was already smooth so it didn't soak in very much and 1/2 way through the job I returned a 5 gallon bucket. Not easy for me as these 5 gallon buckets weigh 60lbs. each and I am not allowed to lift them. So I had to get help to get it back in the truck and then out at Lowe's. The harder part was getting it up on the roof!! Have you ever tried to get a teenager to do something around the house??? Not Easy!...lol

I say painted because you apply this coating with a roller, more specifically a 3/8" nap paint roller. To prepare my roof I first washed it with a good grease cutting soap (Dawn dish washing liquid...lol ) Then after it dried I swept it with a stiff shop broom to get any blown on dust off of it. Applying it was easy and it took me about 30 minutes per coat and 2 days between coats. So after waiting for the weather to cooperate it took over a month to get 5 coats of this Black Jack Roof Gard down on the roof.

This Black Jack Roof Gard also comes in black but the white will help the addition stay cooler because as we know white repels heat. The beauty of this Elastometric Coating is that it will expand and contract 250% so it is very durable going through the 4 seasons of heat and cold. Anyway.....I had about a quart left in the bottom when I finished so I just poured it on the edge and spread it out even...That bucket was not leaving the roof until it was EMPTY!!!

Bottom Line

It took longer than it should have because of all the rain (we are 11.25" over our yearly rainfall already) but the actual job should have only taken a 4 days had it not rained so much. A 5 gallon bucket costs $62 but was well worth it as it will protect my roof on the addition and is supposed to be good for 7 years. The white coating should cut down on the heat in the addition as well as keep the rain on the outside!

In total I have 5 coats of this Black Jack on my addition now, they recommend 2 coats but I wanted the maximum protection....better safe than sorry! Looking at the pictures you can see how bright the roof on the addition is now. I am hoping it is a very long time before it has to be done again!

I have a wife like that, too. ;-) Every now and then it would be nice to get a hug and hear her say, "You did a pretty good job today." And for this I give up my weekends...

I may start contracting myself out soon...lol I have done more things around here in the past 3 years than I ever did before. I have become a Landscaper, Sprinkler Installer, Roofer, Fence Builder, Poolman, Masonry Worker, Plumber, Gardener and A/C Technician! They say you are never too old to learn but it is wearing me out....lol My wife thinks I just sit on my butt all day, she never comments on all the improvements I have done..I bet she will miss me when I go to Indiana for 3 weeks!! ;)

Yep, since I had no other use for any of the coating I just kept going until it was used up. They said it would take more than it did and I could have gotten away with buying 3 one gallon cans but at least I know I have adequate protection...lol ;)

Five coats? Hopefully that'll keep the roof relatively well-protected.
