Owning a motorcycle means during the winter it probably won't see much daylight. At those times the battery still needs to be charged up to prevent damage and you need a battery charger to keep it at peak charge. In the old days you had to remember to go hook up the charger every few days and remember when to unhook it again so you didn't overcharge the battery. Those days are gone forever and now as the old saying goes...I can plug it and forget it!

Black & Decker Smart Battery Charger

This battery charger has 3 power levels to keep those batteries in good shape 6 amps, 4 amps and 2 amps. As the charge of the battery gets stronger it will step down on its own to give you the best your battery can have. Another sweet safety feature is the reverse polarity warning so you don't hook it up wrong and either damage the battery or cause a spark which would be very bad.

This battery charger is smart in that it monitors the state of charge and will lower the input as the battery charges until it is fully charged. In the winter this will aid in keeping any battery at full charge. As the cold robs the battery of its charge the micro processor in the charger will turn on when the battery begins to lose power, thus keeping it fully charged. Which will help me in 2 ways, it will help me keep both my V Star battery fully charged and also my John Deere.

The clamps that attach to the battery posts are strong and won't slip off and the AC cord is 6' so you may need an extension cord depending on where you place it. Speaking of extension cords this charger will compensate for dropped (lower) voltage from using an extension cord. Black & Decker sure came up with a sweet little Smart Charger!

A charger that delivers a low amp current is called a trickle charger, which is actually better for your battery. Charging too fast especially in cold weather will warp the cells of a battery. 6 amps is actually a low voltage to charge with so this charger takes it even further by reducing the charge as it goes. I like to think of this as a trickle charger on steroids...lol

Bottom Line

For $30 I now have a great little charger to maintain both my bike and mower batteries all winter long. Black & Decker backs this charger with a 2 year warranty where most times you get a full 90 day and limited 1 year on other products. The charger weighs about 2lbs so it is light and very portable and looks sharp with the signature Orange and Black of the Black & Decker brand.

Oh yes me too, it worked great on my JD battery which was a might low from sitting all winter. It was fully charged in a few hours. ;)

They also have a larger one (more amps) with the same charging system but this was the size I needed for the John Deere and my motorcycle. I believe he would like the way it slow charges batteries to keep them lasting longer. ;)

I'm thinking that hubby's is going to kick the bucket any day. It's over 20 years old now and I have no clue what brand it is but this sounds like a good replacement!
