My kids gave this Black & Decker FP1510 food processor to me for Christmas two years ago. I am the cook of the family, not just in my own household but for my entire family for big meals and parties. Good choice, kids! They paid less than $50.00 for it.
Being a kitchen gadget freak, this gift was ideal. For starters, this food processor holds 10 cups of whatever you are chopping, shredding, slicing, mixing or blending. It works great for mincing and making crumbs. Big enough to make your food processing job quick and easy.
This Black & Decker FP1510 stands approximately 22" tall when fully assembled. The top attaches to the holding compartment with a slight twist that locks it into place. The feeding tube has a top loading chute and came with a plastic plunger for safely pushing food into the processor. This reduces the chance of "slicing or shredding" your fingers. In fact, this food processor will not even operate unless all pieces are in place. It has continuous feed on it so you are able to process quickly in large amounts to get the job done.
It has only three settings: ON, OFF and PULSE. Easy! There is a small "Continuous On" red light that stays on when you have the processor plugged in. It runs at a fairly rapid speed that is sufficient when using the shredding disc. I use the pulse setting when I am using the chopping blade so that I can control how much fruit and veggies are reduced. I'll say here that it is a rather noisy machine and can get annoyingly loud when using the "pulse" setting.
This unit came with the power base, the 10-cup holding compartment, the latching top, the food plunger, two blade/disc attachments, user manual. The cord is approximately 36" long and is not retractable. It has a place on the bottom where the cord winds around it for easy storage.
The chopping and mixing blade is a curved "S" shaped two sided blade. I mostly use this for making sauces that I want to finely reduce certain ingredients for. My kids won't eat anything with onions in it. This food processor can reduce onions, mushrooms, peppers, garlic cloves...just about anything...and can make them virtually undetected in certain dishes like spaghetti sauce and chili. It also works great for smoothies and fruit drinks. I have even blended the ingredients for making home made ice cream. I make my own enchilada sauce with it. Perfect for fresh salsa. It's just really a handy appliance!
The reversible slicing and shredding disk has the slicing blade and the shredding side of the disc has coarse and fine grating abilities. I can honestly say I do not use the slicing feature on this disc. The disc attaches to a stem in the base of the holding compartment. I use the shredder frequently. It does a great job on cheese especially since I have two choices of how finely it is shredded. I also like to buy my cheese in blocks because it's cheaper than buying already shredded. This saves money on something I use for a lot of recipes. Usually there is a small chunk or slice of cheese left but not enough to be bothered by. My dogs like this treat too! I use it to shred carrots for soups and salads. I save the heels from loaves of bread, extra hot dog and hamburger buns, etc. I season them and put them on a low oven to dry out. Then pop them in the food possessor with the shredder disc in place and it makes 10 cups of really good breadcrumbs.
The base of this unit has suctions cups on it to keep the unit stationary while in use. I like this feature. I had a food processor before that bounced all over the place while in use. Not so with this Black & Decker FP1510.
All pieces of this food processor are dishwasher safe, aside from the base of this unit. This includes the blades, the top and holding chamber, the food plunger. I think the only safety issue that comes to mind is that the blades are sharp so care must be taken when handling them. This unit will not operate unless all parts are in place and the top is locked shut. The base is not water immersible but can be wiped clean with a mild soap or cleanser.
It's a rather tall unit when put together and I do not keep this stored on the counter of my small kitchen. I leave the top off with the attachments left inside the base and turn the top over so that the feeding chute tucks in as well. I had an old toaster cover that fits perfectly over this unit so I keep it covered in the cabinet to avoid dust collecting in the open base compartment.
Other things I've made that come to mind: Excellent cole slaw because the big setting on the shredder chops the cabbage up perfectly. Fresh pineapple to make a wonderful sauce for banana splits. This freezes well too in a zip lock freezer bag. I have grated chunks of chocolate for a double chocolate cake. It purees tomatoes well for fresh tomato soup and sauces. My daughter-in-law used it to puree green beans for baby food. These also freeze well. The list is endless.
I have owned other food processors that cost more than this Black & Decker but gave out or broke within a year of use. The stem where you attach the blades or discs broke completely off on one of them. The snapping latches broke of one by one on the other. I have had this Black & Decker processor for over two years and it is still going strong. I think that the price is right, the efficiency is great and the quality is dependable.
Black & Decker FP1510. Excellent!
