We love this vacuum! We have a 2 year old black lab mix and tan carpets. So, his hair is very obvious, and even after vacuuming (with our upright), it usually looks like we didn't in some places in the house. There is usually still hair all over the stairs, the tools on the vacuum don't work so well for hair, and it's terrible for our furniture. We got tired of dragging the upright up and down the stairs and using the ineffective tools, so the hair kind of collected. The tools that came with the upright did not seem to be designed for stair use. It came with a "power attachment" that did close to nothing against the pet hair.
The Pet Hair Vacuum caught our eye. It had a wide base and two different nozzle attachments, one soft and one hard. The soft attachment that comes with the Pet Hair Vacuum meant that I could really get hair off of the edges and crevices of the stairs as well as the main part of the step. The soft attachment is flexible and has some grippers to really pick up hair that might not fit in the slots.
It works very well on upholstery. I had been using the attachments that came with my upright vacuum, but it was very difficult to actually clean the furniture (I'm also cleaning up after a toddler!) as the hose would try to suck everything up, including the couch cover. I tested the Pet Hair Vacuum out on our couch, just to see how it worked and in less than 30 seconds it had picked up all of the hair (mine and the dog's!)! With the Pet Hair Vacuum the soft nozzle means that the suction is not directly on the surface, there's space between where the suction begins and the nozzle, so that you can actually clean soft surfaces.
Also, another great thing is that it's small and my four year old thinks it's "just right for me, mommy" and now he's helping vacuum up after our dog. I did, however, have to convince him not to actually use the vacuum on the dog.
The vacuum is a bit noisy, we've owned quieter handhelds, but it's not absurdly loud. It scares our dog in to hiding, but it's worth the noise to get the hair off of everything.
Emptying the hair out was really easy, there is just a clip on the top of the vacuum that you push and slide it out. The filter comes out too so you can clean the hair off of it. I emptied the container twice while vacuuming our stairs. The container is plastic, so it stays fairly clean (it doesn't hold dust or anything) and we've only had the vacuum a short time, so I'm not sure about the filter life.
The Bissell Hand Held Pet Hair vacuum is the best hand held vacuum I have bought so far (I've owned 2 others). The vacuum also comes with an attachment so that you can use it in the car, I have yet to try this feature out, but it makes it an extra good deal! We bought this vacuum for $30 at Best Buy, and it was a great purchase!
