Bissell Healthy Home Vacuum —

I needed a good vacuum to pick up after my menagerie of pets (2 dogs and 5 cats) - my wishlist: upright, long cord, easy transition from regular vacuuming to using attachments, long hose, works on carpet and hardwood floors and not bagless. I was replacing a piece of junk ($50 upright) so I was ready to upgrade to a decent vacuum that would last. I was seriously considering laying down hundreds for a Dyson but I happened upon user reviews for the Bissell Healthy Healthy Home Vac. For the most part, the reviews were positive and raving about the vacuums ability to pick up pet hair! It seemed to meet all of my criteria except it was bagless. I shopped around for the best price and opted to buy it at Linens n Things - I had a 20% off coupon so it was less than $200 plus I had a rebate offer from the manufacturer.

The vacuum assembled very easily and I was putting it to good use immediately. At first I was thrilled with the vacuum and I didn't even mind that I had to empty the cup once while I vacuumed the house. However, I don't think I had the vacuum more than a month before I started having problems. First, I had trouble powering the unit. I thought perhaps it was the outlet, so I would try different outlets in my home. That wasn't the problem. Even my husband had issues getting it to power up. It was aggravating, but after multiple tries, we would get the power going. That problem lasted a few weeks before it didn't happen again. The second problem which led me to buy a new vacuum was the rotating brush stopped working. I cut the hair from the roller multiple times (following the troubleshooting guide for that problem) but that didn't resolve the issue. I could get it working if I would vacuum several rooms and continue to try pressing the button to engage the roller. Eventually it would kick in, but just as easily (and for no apparent reason) stop. After my earlier power problem, I finally gave up trying to use the vacuum.

Rather than taking it to be repaired, I opted to get a new vacuum.

Other negatives about this vacuumm: the attachments would come off the unit during vacuuming which was annoying, the unit was very heavy to bring up and down stairs, not to mention push around the house, the power button is on the handle and is too easy to hit and power off during use, same with the button to power the roller, finally, when you use the stair/upholstery attachment, it shrinks the hose making it dangerous to use on the stairs.

I would not recommend buying this vacuum until the manufacturer addresses the main power issue and the roller power issue. Otherwise, it was a great vacuum.

Did the manufact ever help you get the vac fixed? I'm looking to buy one of these and wondering if this was just a bad batch or consistent problem... :-(
