Bissell Big Green Clean Machine —

I bought this a few years back because I didn't want to have to rent a shampoo machine every time the dog had an accident or one of the kids tracked in mud on the carpet.

Quick and Easy

This little machine is perfect for the spot cleaning we all encounter from time to time, either from pets or children. It is light weight and easy to store in a closet, sets up quick and cleans the spots up very nice. Either carpet, area rugs or furniture it works great on all of them. Using it a few times easily saved me money from renting a shampoo machine and I thought I had finally gotten ahead of the game. I could even shampoo the entire house in less than four hours and felt it was just as good as those rental machines.

It is powerful enough to get most of the water back out of the carpet so drying times are very reasonable. The Big Green Clean Machine comes with a 1 year warranty and I felt that was reasonable. After all if something is going to mess up 1 year is a good term to weed out any problems, or so I thought!

The Downfall

Right at around 14 months of being a happy consumer of the Bissell I owned I found out the horrible truth of the matter. Apparently from all the "Hot water" that you are supposed to use to get carpets clean, the plastic becomes brittle. Now I rinsed this thing out after every use, because I know that leaving chemical cleaners in anything is not good for them. I am not talking harsh chemicals here, just those that are made to get rid of pet stains.

While using my Big Green Clean machine one day I discovered a very large puddle of soapy water under it. Figuring I just got careless while setting it back down after filling it, I wiped up the mess and continued working on the carpet. Next fill-up I noticed it again and a trail going across the floor. After a real good look see I found the culprit!!! I had sprung a leak right by where the handle attaches to the side. Well here was a situation we all fear, something goes wrong not long after the warranty expires.

Being the handy man I try to be, I grabbed the silicone and proceeded to patch up my leak. After rinsing it off real good, I put silicone inside and out to make sure I had a water tight repair. I let it to dry for a week before I used it again. Every thing was fine for about a month and I got a call at work. My wife went to use it and after using the handle to close it up after filling it, the entire side broke off and flooded the carpet with hot soapy water.

The Faceoff

After a few phone calls and many not so nice words I found out I was up the creek without a paddle. Since the warranty had expired they were not willing to make the repairs at least not free. Instead they were willing to replace the bucket portion at current prices, which was only $45 cheaper than buying a new one. That did not include shipping both ways either. The bad part was that since they deemed it was because of abuse rather than a manufacturing defect they would not warranty the new bucket portion.

Apparently they never took into account that the stress on that portion of the bucket with HOT WATER inside would eventually make the thing brittle, or maybe they did, who knows for sure.

Would I buy one again.....NO There are too many other alternatives on the market now, that are made differently and of better materials. I now own a better made machine to clean the carpets, but that is another review. So good-bye Big Green Leaking Machine, you have been replaced!!

Super review - you have no idea how long I've been putting off reviewing this! I haven't had the problem. We bought it for my daughter and use it a lot when we're there because of our dog. We have a small version and that one leaks. We were thinking about getting this one. Hmm... I better skip buying one for now. Jo
