Bisquick Original Pancake and Baking Mix —

Typically I cook from scratch, but I do keep Bisquick on hand. Bisquick is a pre-mixed flour for baking. No need to worry with salt and baking powder or baking soda.

From what I understand, Bisquick was first made as a pancake base. The pancakes are good. The recipe is right on the side of the box. I think they're better than pancake mixes but not as good as my cousin Lynn's recipe that she gave me long ago.

If you're up to scratch cooking, then here's Cousin Lynn's pancake recipe:

At some point someone figured out that Bisquick was a nice basic baking mix (or maybe they had that idea from the start and just marketed on the pancakes). In any case, Bisquick can be used to make biscuits, dumplings and other flour mix based goods. One especially good recipe with Bisquick is strawberry shortcake. It's not the pound cake type base. It's the old fashioned biscuit type of shortcake and brings back memories. It tastes great too.

I'd say my all-time favorite Bisquick recipe would be Bisquick Sausage Cheese Balls. That's one recipe we always make at the holidays. Sausage balls are always popular at gatherings or to serve when folks drop over. I think the sausage ball recipe is on the side of the box at times, but it's not on my box that I just bought. It can also be a little confusing to make sausage cheese balls to start with (though it's really easy once you get the hand of it). I worked up an article about making Bisquick sausage balls and made photos to make it even easier.

Here's my sausage ball recipe with hints and tips:

I'd buy Bisquick just to make sausage balls, but I use it for the other recipes too. Even though it's not all that hard to measure out flour with salt and rising agents, there are some days that I just want to pour in a mix like Bisquick. Since Bisquick made a great baking mix and also have super recipes, I keep Bisquick as a staple in my cabinet.

You should make some. They really are easy. They also warm up nice in the oven. Not so special in the microwave though.

My father, who had Parkinson's Disease, loved pancakes. He used Bisquick since he couldn't handle a lot of measuring. When the disease progressed enough so he couldn't do that much I would make them. In the morning Bisquick was about all I could handle. Like Garfield, I don't do mornings. lol
