Three Great Things about Sweet Home BIRMINGHAM, Alabama!

I live in Bessemer, Alabama -- a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. One of the
biggest deals about Birmingham, Alabama is Vulcan. He is the second tallest
statue in the USA, second only to the Lovely Lady Liberty [don't think France
has done anything so nice for us since -- ;) ]. I like to think that Vulcan is the
Statue of Liberty's somewhat short boyfriend.
Also, as one can note from the photo, his smithing apron does not cover his
entire hind area so a portion of Birmingham gets mooned year round.

Lots of people think they know a lot about Birmingham from the stuff in history
books and movies, but Birmingham really isn't like it used to be in the times of
MLK Jr. and KKK. I've lived and worked in the area for 23 years and can
remember back to the 1980s and 1990s when Birmingham's City Council was
made up entirely of back people except for (dare I say it) 1 token white person
(his name was Jimmy) and they were often seen on the local evening news
discussing some point or other (with a lot of arguments). Also, black mayor,
Richard Arrington ran the town for 20 years before he resigned. He was the first
black mayor of Birmingham and retained that title from his first election in 1979
and through 4 more elections until his resignation in 1999.

Birmingham simply has not been run by the KKK for a really, really long time.
Today, I'm proud to say, the Birmingham City Council is made up of 9 people,
6 black people and 3 white people. I haven't seen them on the news lately, so
perhaps they are getting more work done these days. For more information, you

In Irondale, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, a nun named Rita Rizzo (known
in most Catholic circles as Mother Angelica) has set up a huge satellite powered
TV station along with radio and other media that reaches worldwide. Her home
at Our Lady of the Angels offers Eucharistic pilgrimages of faith. EWTN's website is:
