A few years back we decided to lay an area rug we had stored away. We brought it into the house, unrolled it and were greeted by the odor of old pet accidents. We let a few days pass and while the odor faded a bit (or we became acclimated to it), it was clearly a no go.
Then I remembered an infomercial I had seen for a concentrated odor eliminator, SCOE 10X. During the infomercial, a small amount of ammonia was poured into a woman's palm. Sniffing it, she recoiled. A moment later some SCOE 10X was sprayed on her palm and the odor was gone she claimed.
Since the rug was an extremely expensive piece of floor covering I thought it was worth a shot. We sent away for some.
SCOE 10X
A starter kit of SCOE 10X includes a 3.2 oz. container of the concentrate and a 32 oz. sprayer. I mixed it with enough purified water to fill the spray bottle.
Armed with a black light I located all the "stained" areas and proceeded to saturate those areas with the solution. The solution is fragrance-free though if you concentrate you can smell a faint chlorine odor.
Within minutes no odor could be detected. But of course this was true as well when we had earlier used other products. The difference in this case was that when the rug dried the odor did not reappear.
BioFog, the manufacturer claims that SCOE 10X is effective on eliminating odors including urine, feces, vomit, pet odor, rotting garbage, perspiration and even skunk.
So what is it?
The manufacturer is a bit vague here claiming it to be an eco-friendly, biodegradable, non-toxic pro-biotic of one kind or another. The faint odor and my background in chemistry tells me it is a solution of chlorine dioxide. Sounds harsh, but it's actually quite benign. More to the point it eliminates odors rather than masking them. To date we have never observed any discoloration or bleaching effect when using the product.
According to the manufacturer SCOE 10X is mild enough to be used directly on your pet in the event it gets skunked.
Other Uses
We have used SCOE 10X several times on our fouled garbage bins that are left in the garage. The solution eliminated the foul odor virtually immediately and did not allow it to return.
Where to find and cost
SCOE 10X seems only to be available on-line (scoe10x.com). The starter kit sells for $20.00 plus shipping. Larger quantities are available all the way up to a 5.5 gallon pail that makes a 55 gallon drum of the diluted solution.
My Viewpoint
Yes, it's expensive, but my experience with the product has been positive. I've spent considerably more than this many times over the years on odor eliminating products that plain just don't work. This product works.
