Quick View: This spot treatment for fleas simply doesn't work for my little Jack Russell Terrier. He's biting and scratching himself raw - possibly worse than before I applied the Bio-Spot. It's back to Advantage for us!

About Bio Spot "Spot On" Flea and Tick Control for Dogs

I received a free three month supply of this product through a freebie site and figured I could save some serious cash by using it on Mickey. That is, if it worked. It seemed promising. It made all the claims of killing fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and even inhibiting the eggs of these pests.

After bathing and drying my dog, I applied one half of a tube on the base of his neck and one half at the base of his tail as directed. My dog was not affected by the solution and didn't seem irritated by it.

In general, when I use Advantage, his itching and biting stops in about 24 hours so I waited a day to see what would happen. To my surprise, Mickey was biting and digging MORE than before I applied the Bio-Spot. His hind area is red and sore and he has lost fur in the back. He spends a lot of time nibbling and scratching himself when I can't even see fleas on him! He does have a flea allergy - so says his vet - and one flea will drive him crazy. I generally have to take him for a steroid shot and get steroid pills to give him every other day for a while to settle his itching down when it gets bad. However, when I applied the Bio-Spot, he wasn't irritated or going crazy itching. I thought I was warding that off.

Bio-Spot is inexpensive. It is about $16.00 for six tubes, which would be six months of protection. It comes in different strengths for different sized dogs and they do make a cat formula as well. Never use the dog formula on a cat though.

I like saving money and I would have loved if this product worked for us but it doesn't. AT ALL. My poor dog deserves better and I am going to the vet to fix him up this weekend. Perhaps Bio-Spot will work for those dogs with mild flea infestations and animals who aren't sensitive to fleas. All I know is this product made matters worse and I won't be using it again. Cheap (or free) is great but not if it doesn't do the job. The good thing is that I'm not out any money. The bad thing is that my little dog is miserable and it's because I was trying to save a buck. *sigh*

My Viewpoint

For us, Bio Spot "Spot On" Flea and Tick Control for Dogs doesn't work. It's cheap and it has big claims but, for my dog, I need Advantage. It's the only spot flea killer that actually works for him. I have tried Frontline and now this and neither did the trick. Form now on, I'll stick to what I know works. My dog is well worth the cost of Advantage! 2 stars for Bio-Spot and I am being generous. Your dog may respond well. if so, great! My dog needs more though than Bio-Spot.

I won't chance it again. As you see by these comments, I am not alone with bad experiences. My vet bathes my dog before applying Advantage and he is fine. I think my dog simply had a bad reaction to this product, unfortunately.

It seems more and more people are having bad experiences with this product. How scary is it that our animals are suffereing when we're trying to help them? I hope you wrote or write a review on this as well. the more info, the better for consumers who may be wanting to try this stuff on their pets. Thanks for the input.

OMG!!!!!! i was just coming online to find out if my dog had a rash due to the product....I agree with you 100%. My cockapoo loves the outdoors and we enjoy walking and playing in the park. I decided to buy Biospot shampoo and spray so i can wash n apply every 2 weeks. This made the problem worst. My dog would scratch uncontrollably but i thought it was the fleas that were biting her...after about three days of my dog crying due to the itch n redness i decided to buy frontline. She is better now! I think they should remove this product from all pet stores and shelves....THIS IS A PUNISHMENT TO YOUR PET IF YOU PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT!! please Advantage or Frontline are my recommendation to dog lovers....

I absolutely will call! I spent a lot of money reversing the effects and my dog suffered because of this product. I will make that call and report what happened. Thanks for the info and all the best with your dog.

I have contacted the ASPCA poison control center. They advised me to keep the product and take lots of pics. She sounded like they will have a class action lawsuit. If I have to put my dog down, I will certaintly try to get this product off the shelf. I have written reviews on every site I could find. The lady from BIO Spot said this has never happened before. I told her to start looking on the internet. If your dog has gotten sick from BIO spot please call the ASPCA poison control center at 1-888-299-2973 and report them. Nobody should lose their family pet over fles and tick medication!!!!

Oh no! I so hope your dog is OK! We should sue the makers! This stuff is making our dogs sick, uncomfortable, and maybe even killing them! I hope you write a review. The more reviews, the more people will see it isn't just one or two incidences but a LOT of them. I agree. Spend the extra and buy what you know works. Good luck!

angieshort wrote on Aug 4, 2008 at 2:54PM

I used this product on my dog and about a week later she broke out in the worst rash she has ever had. Took her to the vet today thinking she had mange and they told me it is an allergic reaction to Bio spot. In addition the infection has entered her blood and we may have to put her down. Don't try to save a buck if you love your pets. I will never use or recommend this product to anyone.

Tiffanyonscreen wrote on Jul 31, 2008 at 11:04AM

If I'm not mistaken most of these spot treatments require NOT bathing you pet for a few days before or after as they product required the oil built up on the animals skin to travel and be effective. You may find better results if you apply it a few day after his last bath.....

In response to AnimalHouse's comment from Jul 18, 2008 at 2:19PM:

I totally agree! Please write this comment as a review. The more people who know about this product the better. Whether your dog has a bad reaction or not, it doesn't seem to KILL FLEAS and that's what it was made to do. Thanks for the comment!

AnimalHouse wrote on Jul 18, 2008 at 2:19PM

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON BIO SPOT. Sorry for the caps, but I wanted to tell everyone about my experience. Unlike many, I did not suffer adverse effects to Bio Spot- all six of my animals were fine after using it EXCEPT for the impact of the flea bites themselves. Bio Spot didn't work at all. My animals continued scratching at themselves until they were bloody, even after two months of treatment with Bio Spot. I used house sprays, bombs, and yard sprays in conjunction with Bio Spot (as recommended) but since the Bio Spot didn't work, all of these other treatments ended up being completely useless, as well. I ended up having to wash all the animals down in an effort to get rid of the Bio Spot and then bought another, more expensive treatment. Trying Bio Spot cost me two months of continued flea infestation plus the purchase of more home/yard treatments since the Bio Spot didn't work at all. I'm frustrated. This stuff is being sold by everyone these days and it just doesn't work. Stay away from it. In the long run, I spent over $400 in repeated house sprays, bombs, and other products. I thought I was saving money by purchasing Bio Spot but it cost me a lot more in the long run. Buy the more expensive product at the beginning and save yourself a lot of trouble. Since Bio Spot didn't take care of the fleas, I ended having to buy medicated shampoos and medicine just to treat all the flesh wounds from the animals' continued scratching! It was crazy. Don't buy the product!

In response to queenali's comment from Jul 3, 2008 at 2:05AM:

First, let me say that you should bathe the dog ASAP. My vet said that helped a lot in fending off more symptoms. He ended up bathing my dog again to get the stuff off then, after that, giving him a flea dip. Then he gave him a steroid shot and allergy pills. Finally, when he was sure all the chemicals were gone from the Bio Spot, he applied Advantage to Mickey and all is now well. It cost me $220 but he's happy, flea free, gained some weight back, and not panting any longer. My vet said some dogs die who have a reaction to Bio Spot. Not ALL dogs have reactions but those who do really are miserable and can get sick. Try bathing her with non flea shampoo, something gentle, and see if she perks up. Good luck!

queenali wrote on Jul 3, 2008 at 2:05AM

I had almost the same problem with my free sample of bio spot. My dog is not allegic to fleas as far as I know but since I gave her the treatment last night she has been itching and biting herself. She is also hiding under clothing and blankets like she is trying to rub it off. Plus we have found three fleas on her still. What did your vet end up doing for your dog?

In response to Tator03's comment from Jun 21, 2008 at 9:23PM:

My vet didn't tell me not to use anything else until after I did. I wish I had called and checked first but I honestly thought these spot treatments were all basically the same. I just paid over $88.00 for 6 months worth of Advantage. Bio Spot is like $10.00. But I gotta do what I gotta do for my buddy.

Tator03 wrote on Jun 21, 2008 at 9:23PM

One thing to remember, You did say that your dog has an allergy to fleas and your vet did not recommend any other type of flea control, Maybe the reason was he knew that no other would be right for him. But again I proble would have done the samething to save a buck. Thanks for the info, I got the same deal for my husbands dog and I will be glad to pass it along to him.
Thanks again for the upfront info,

I hear ya there. I wonder if it's worth getting? My dog is older and he always has to have flea treatments and allergy stuff plus the usual shots, etc. I could have used insurance when he had intestinal surgery a couple of years ago. That was nearly as expensive as ME having surgery!

I am looking at it for my dog. People laugh when a girl says "I broke a nail", but it cost me over $300 to have my dogs broken nail fixed once and he's done it four times!

I heard of the pet insurance. I just dropped $225.00 at the vet's. I wished I had insurance at that point. For an 11 pound dog, he sure is pricey! lol.

Can you believe, it's not really a surprise but now they have insurance for your pets. And I was reading on Zootoo.com that their are lawyers for animals. Americans sure do love their pets.

It does seem that Jacks have more skin irritations than other breeds. I had a lab mix and he wasn't this bad during flea season. My dog loses all his hair in the back and looks red and rashy every June no matter what I do. I just made it all worse with this stuff.

Oh, yes, he's my baby. He is so devoted to me that he will lay by my side for hours and not move even if he needs to go out or he wants to eat. I feel so bad that I didn't just do what works for him the first time!

jazzybean01 wrote on Jun 4, 2008 at 2:01PM

Patty, Patty, Patty. Just kidding. I think I spend more money on my dog than me. He eats better than me and has better toys than me, oh and let's not forget the vet bill. Haha. Gotta keep the fuzzy ones happy and healthy.

jubylei wrote on Jun 1, 2008 at 2:41PM

I remember when researching different types of dogs reading that Jack Russells are known for having skin allergies. My husband and I have two Jacks (that think they are children more so than dogs). We've never tried Bio-Spot, but thanks to your information, don't plan to either.

LoveisJoy wrote on May 30, 2008 at 2:24PM

Sorry this happened to you, but your review is going to help so many people. I remember I was going to try Bio Spot for cats but the reviews of it were horrible. I am eternally grateful for the people who wrote those reviews before I put it on my cat. Good luck to you.

LisaCarey wrote on May 29, 2008 at 10:50PM

Good to know! I would hate for little Jack, (my westie) to have this kind of reaction, and with Texas bugs bigger than cattle, we need good protection.

kid-kansas wrote on May 29, 2008 at 10:13PM

Not sure what kind my wife got for the cat one time but it tore her up bad...red rash, lost hair and she was vomiting bad. The vet said she had an allergic reaction to it.

No wonder they are giving away for free! It's cheap anyway but sometimes cheap works. Not in this case! I think my dog is more irritated now than before. He can't even get a decent nap in without biting and scratching. He'll be much better after Saturday when he goes to see the vet. My vet is great and fixes my dog right up!

Yikes. My dog is still very unhappy. I gave him a bath with very mild soap and hope that my vet will fix him up this weekend. Poor dog. He trusts me and I let him down and yes, I can imagine the guilt you felt. I guess I should stick with what I know works and doesn't cause reactions.

AnnaBanana wrote on May 29, 2008 at 2:09PM

You surely seem like a kind person, Patty, and I'm sorry about this upsetting experience. That part about it being free reminds me of that famous quote by Mark Twain about "the preacher who can preach you a sermon for nothing AND IT'S WORTH IT!" In other words, I guess, sometimes we get what we pay for even if we deserve better. My best to you and Mickey.

RudiXeno wrote on May 29, 2008 at 8:39AM

My dog had such a severe reaction to this product that it wound up costing us $125 at the vet because she stopped eating. Let's not even discuss the guilt I felt.

There's always Butt Paste if you really need it though. :) I remember going to visit my father and seeing a big ole tube of Butt Paste sitting there. You'd think they would have come up with a more creative name! lol. Fleas stink. I think for dogs they must be like having 500 mosquitoes all biting at you. Maddening!
