Pros

absolutely no high-airs or pretenses, exposes new and young artists, this is someone's apartment. that's fun

Bill Gross - 65Grand Art Studio —

Hmmm. What a neat place?! Art Gallery or living room? This off-the-beaten-path venue is artist Bill Gross' apartment, as in, well, he lives there. While living there, he also showcases various new and underexposed artists and their rawest works. Both cutting edge and at the same time grungy, I like this place for being true to the original intent of art: showing interesting work to the general public, both exposing and encouraging them to ponder something new. 65 Grand does away with high airs and other snob-appeal formalities, and gets right down to the artwork and the artist, even if that means viewing art in someone's kitchen.

I want to recommend this "gallery" for its lack of pretense and lack of fake cocktail parties, both of which have nothing to do with art. On the other hand, it is a bit hard to recommend because it is out of the way and I have no idea what you are going to find there on any one occasion. Thus, for the adventure-seekers, I recommend that you call ahead to see what is going on and, if you feel like strolling through someone's kitchen to get the newest sizzling artist before their artwork becomes untouchable, then feel free to Fear No Art!

It's in Chicago at 1378 W. Grand (on the corner of Grand and Noble, the entrance is on Noble). There's an opening there tonight that I'm going to check out.
