I was delighted when I heard that the Big Ten conference was forming a sports network. You see, my undergraduate degree is from the University of Illinois, and I've always been a big sports fan. Through the very seldom thick and the most often thin, I've enjoyed rooting for the Illini.

With more lean times over the years, that meant I didn't see much of the team on TV. However, now that the BTN is on the air, most of the football games and most of the basketball games will be televised. The ones that are not picked up by ABC or ESPN air on the BTN.

This has been great. For example, a couple of nights ago, I was able to see my guys romp in an early season exhibition against Cupcake U. (err. Quincy College).

I also like the evening Big Ten Tonight shows, because the Illini get planty of coverage, much more so than on free TV or ESPN. Better yet, I got it at no additional cost, since it is on extended basic.

So, my Illini are on TV lots, and life is good. The arrow is pointing up on both our major sports program.

I guess the biggest drawback is that the BTN and Comcast haven't made a deal yet. Comcast wants their customers to pay extra. So my advice to the Comcast customers that want the BTN is to stop feeding the (cable) pig.

Another drawback is that the game announcers can be somewhat short of network quality. So what? That's my team on TV!

Anyhow, the BTN is a Godsend and it earns my highest recommendations
