Big Love is not for everyone.  It centers around a family with polygamy as the central theme.  The real point of the show, however, is the complex nature of human relationships.  It's merely the setting that's quirky.  It shows jealousy, envy, greed, faith, desire, and everything else.

The characters all struggle with demons, and there's something in each of them with which to relate.  Some of the sex scenes seem gratuitious (we should have them because we're on HBO, type), but the show is NOT about sex.

It is complex in ways that Six Feet Under was complex.  I don't personally like it as much as SFU, but it's worth watching, DVRing, and rewatching.  I can't wait to see what happens next with each character.
