I didn't start watching Big Brother until season four, and starting that season it became a twist that some of the housemates would have or would have had prior relationships with each other outside of the show. It was a great gimmick the first few seasons, but after awhile the twist was no longer a twist, and became expected. Fans of the show just wanted to get back to a house full of total strangers, and I wanted to watch such a season to see what it was like.

After all these years, it seems like we may have finally gotten what we were asking for. We finally have total and complete strangers residing in the house. On top of that, there really aren't many twists other than CBS telling us they filled the house with opposing personalities. I don't think I'd call them opposing, though, so much as just big personalities, and some of them have yet to materialize. We thought April, who came on the show saying she was OCD, would have a hard time living with the others, but instead it's the opposite, as she is having a showmance with Ollie, who we thought would be a holy roller, but just seems to be a religious guy with no bad habits.

The theme of the house was supposed to go along with the many different age genres that were living in the house, but it seems instead of that we just have decades/eras. We have a frilly pink room, a flower power hippie room, an 80s heavy metal room, and a retro red and chrome kitchen. The ages in the house cover a larger spread than that, as they range from 22 to 75. While it's great that Big Brother is recognizing the older folks, Jerry has been ostracized right away because he's more than fifty years older than the youngest person in the house, and the closest person in age to him is more than twenty years younger. While he's in great physical shape, it just makes it hard for him to fit in.

The other houseguests on the show make up the stereotypes of what we normally expect here. We had a gay male that was refreshingly non-flamboyant for a change, yet was voted out quickly. We have an African-American mother of three that wanted to go against stereotype and not be the typical "angry black woman," but she needs to stop ranting and raving for that to happen. And, of course, we have the blonde Hooters girl, who goes against stereotype by being completely likable, yet has the most ingratiating laugh I perhaps have ever heard.

It has really become a very interesting season as people are more free to make and change alliances, not being tied to anyone else, and that seems to create more conflict, which is of course the real reason we watch. While it seemed at first as if no larger alliances would be formed, and we would just have many groups of two or three, there have been enough conflicts this week that is seems people have settled into a larger alliance of seven and smaller alliance of four.

Sadly, it seems Big Brother isn't having the summer ratings boom it normally experiences, which is a shame considering it's actually a good season. I'm chalking it up to the failings of last season turning people off. People just weren't as interested in watching a group of over-sexed young people galavanting around. Hopefully they'll come around and give it a chance again.

Like you Laura, I have also been watching since BB4. I was actually, when reading your review, wondering what it was like when the other Big Brother houses didn't have twists and the house guests were complete strangers. My favorite seasons are 10, 8 , 7 (All-Stars), and maybe 4. I agree with you on season nine as well I was completely turned off by it...although being the true Big Brother fan that I am, I literally forced myself to watch it. Thank God for TiVo, right?
But season 10 has to be my favorite by far. I really enjoy the 'no twists', and it being complete strangers. I know that season 11 will start in July, and I hope they really some of the great ideas they had for 10 and incorporate those into this up and coming season. America's player should always just be for one week.
One more thing to add. I think that they should bring the secret power back as well. The 'Coup d'Etat. Where the person that wins the 'Coup d'Etat', has the power to overthrow the HOH at eviction night and put their choice of nominee's up, and the houseguests have to vote between those two nominee's right after their made.

I've been watching since BB2, this season is pretty good. I agree with you, I'm glad there are no secret twists (yet), and they are all really strangers. It's refreshing to kind of bring it back to the beginning.....
