These potato buds are made from 100% real potatoes and are so easy to make. With Betty's potato buds you are finished in a jiffy and without a mess to clean up later. You just boil your water, add your milk and butter and your done. I usually don't like instant potatoes because of the way they taste but these taste like the real thing.

I usually always buy Idahoan instant potatoes. I decided to try Betty Crocker Potato Buds because they were on sale. Big mistake! They tasted awful! They were so bland, dry, and just terrible. They tasted like wet paper and paste or something. The texture was also awful. They were not soft and fluffy. They were just flat and bland. I was very disappointed because usually Betty Crocker is a great brand. I am definitely sticking with Idahoan instant potatoes from now on.

This used to be the ONLY instant potato product I would use, but since they "improved" them, I will never use them again. They taste just like those pasty store brand ones now. I have a feeling they lost a ton of customers when they changed their product.

- First let me comment on my review title.  I am reviewing the box of Betty Crocker Potato Buds that we just finished.  Apparently Betty Crocker has changed their formula; and there is much dissent among users of this new product.  I will be reviewing a box that was purchased before that time period. - Please copy and paste the following link to your browser to read customer comments: - bettycrocker.com/products/potatoes/products/potato%20buds/potato%20buds Betty Crocker Potato Buds are made from 100% real potatoes and are a great way to make mashed potatoes if you're in a hurry or don't have any fresh potatoes in the pantry.  The box that we normally purchase is the 28 oz. size.  There are approximately 34 1/3-cup servings per box.   The potatoes can be made either on the stove-top or in the microwave in just a few minutes.  Simply add water, milk, margarine/butter, salt and Potato Buds.  What I especially like is that you can control the amount of fat and sodium that go into your potatoes.  We make ours with skim milk, very little margarine and very little salt. A 1/3 cup serving contains 160 calories when prepared with whole milk and butter/margarine.  That can be cut down considerably using skim milk and less margarine as I have noted above.  The prepared potatoes contain 20mg of Sodium, 330mg of Potassium and 1g of Dietary Fiber. We think that Betty Crocker Potato Buds are the closest to the real thing, considering the quick and easy prep time.  I hope that Betty Crocker will heed the comments that are being made and make the necessary changes to their formulation.

I have been a Potato Buds user for years.  The 'New and Improved' Potato Buds are awful!  They no longer taste like potatoes. The texture is gummy and viscous.  My family left potatoes on their plate. The little one called them Potato Duds.  I have questions for Betty Crocker: How can a company take Potatoes and make them NOT taste like potatoes? Why would a company do it? Who is the focus group who preferred these?  If I were doing a taste test, I would put a plate of real mashed potatoes, a second plate of the old style of Potato Buds, and then a third plate with the new version of Potato Buds.   I don't believe that ANYONE would pick the 'new and improved' ones.  What are they really putting in the Potato Buds to make them tasteless?  What is the percentage of potatoes to preservatives?

Warning!!!  Potato Buds recipe has changed!  Back in February 2010 I would have agreed with this review.  But since then Betty Crocker has changed the recipe for their Potato Buds, and the new version is TERRIBLE!  Really.  They smell bad, taste bad, and have a consistency like library paste.  Do NOT buy this product...you will NOT like it, I can promise you that.  It's a real shame, too, because this used to be the best brand of instant mashed potatoes around.  I have no idea why Betty Crocker would change the recipe.  Please see their website for a discussion on this topic.  So far there are more than 200 comments about the new, horrible tasting potates--ALL NEGATIVE.

I turn to instant mashed potatoes when I'm in a hurry or I need mashed potatoes and have no potatoes on hand.  Betty Crocker Potato Buds are the brand I depend on for great natural taste.  You could possible pass these off as the real thing, they taste so good.  I use them for mashed potaotes and gravy, for making potato bread in my bread maker and for topping casseroles.  I love the texture of these instant mashed potatoes.  They are easy to fix when your hands are busy doing three different things toward the end of preparing dinner.  Watch for coupons on Betty Crocker potato buds.  The price of the product is already good, but with a coupon it even gets better.  These instant potato buds are fast to fix and great for busy families that love natural tasting potatoes.  Betty Crocker has done it again with another great cooking timesaver.  Potato Buds is a product that I have come to depend on.

**Betty Crocker's Potato Buds in my opinion are the best instant potatoes on the market! There flavor, texture and their look is close to homemade mashed potatoes. My adult kids won't buy any others as well! Mom taught em' good!** **They are a little pricey, but well worth the price you pay. If you find one that is cheaper, but get's thrown in the garbage, you wasted money, not saved it! I would much rather pay more for a good quality food, than to save money only to throw it down the drain!** **All in all, if you want an instant potato that is close to tasting like homemade mashed potatoes, try Betty Crocker's Potato Buds, they are delicious!**
