Best Romantic Comedies: My Top List —

Okay, so I like romantic comedies. And, I am going to attempt to share my favorites here. In my mind, these are the best romantic comedies ever! (I admit I didnt include the classic romantic comedies... I thought I would focus on more modern romantic movies).  I am wondering what you think are the top romantic comedies too! (maybe we can swap favorites!)

Okay, here is my Top 10 Romantic Comedies list but I am sure it should be more like the Top 100 romantic comedies. :)

Here goes... and the Romantic Comedy winners are........

  1. Sweet Home Alabama- I love Reese Witherspoon in this movie. There is something about her that I just adore! I am also a total sucker for the successful woman that realizes that she doesnt need all the glitz and glam to be happy. This is a classic girl misses old boyfriend from home movie-- but she doesnt know it.
  2. Clueless- Who doesnt love the stupidity of Alicia Silverstone in this movie? But, yet again, you see cute girl likes the basic guy without the glitz. (seeing a pattern?)
  3. How to Lose A Guy in 10 days- Another one of my favorites- Kate Hudson. She is so cute too!  This movie makes me laugh every time I see it. She is so obnoxious and cute at the same time in the movie. An over the top romantic comedy that makes you laugh and reminds you of your girlfriends too.
  4. Love Actually- Great "holiday" movie with several subplots that follow the lives of 8 couples. It is a must see romantic comedy in my book. And, yes, there are many no-name actors but you also have some leading actors like: Liam Nelson, Kiera Knightly, Hugh Grant, and others.
  5. Along came polly- Ben Stiller and Jennifer Anniston are the leading actors in Along Came Polly. This feel good movie is about two very different people and how they come together to appreciate their differences. I wouldnt say this is the best romantic comedy, but every time I flip through the channels and see it, I get sucked in. So, it gets props for that.
  6. Pretty Woman- Can there even be an argument on this one? It is one of the best "classic romantic comedies ever".
  7. Just like heaven- Okay, so I like Reese Witherspoon. And, to nobody's surprise, she appears and reappears on my list. The premise of the movie (a girl gets stuck in limbo- between heaven and real life) sounds so stupid, but the movie was very well done. It is definitely worth a watch.
  8. The Princess Bride- Oh, Buttercup and Westly. How could you not love this movie? One of my all time favorite movies.
  9. Dying Young- I think I am the only person on the planet that has seen this movie. It came out in the early 90s and is a Julia Roberts and Campbell Scott movie. He is a famous author and she is struggling to get by. Julia becomes "Victors" caretaker as he goes through cancer treatment. Needless to say, parts of the movie are heart breaking.  (may be more ROMANCE AND LESS COMEDY) I cry EVERY time I watch this movie. My husband laughs at me every time too.
  10. The Holiday- Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Kate Winslet were strong performers in this movie about getting away from life and letting go by moving to a new place. I watched this movie with my husband and he even liked it.  Shocker! (and the best part is that my former colleague- Tim-- recommended it to me. A rec from a guy. Extra points!) And, yes, Jude Law is hot.

Some argue that movies like Something About Mary, Pride and Prejudice, and Shakespeare in Love are among the best "romantic comedies". While I really like all of those movies A LOT and they would be at the top of my list, I wouldnt necessarily put them in the romantic comedy genre. But, that could just be me.

What are your favorites? I woud love to know what your top 10 romantic comedies are! (I need to round out the action, Kung Fu, Sci-Fi, Blood and Guts movie collection in my house)

I've been doing "My Ten Favorite---" of all genres--we certainly differ in our tastes regarding what defines 'romantic comedy"--I agree with two of your selections--Pretty Woman and Love Actually

CryBabyTityMouse wrote on Feb 27, 2009 at 1:39PM

I love your list, but I would add to it 2 great movies. PS I love you is one and Lonesome Dove. These are both true love stories!

Yep, When Harry Met Sally is an Oldie but goodie.

Good list, Jolie! As I go back a little further, I have to cast a vote for "When Harry Met Sally". Hope you've seen it! (I'm noticing quite a few tapes of it at Goodwill these days.)

Great list! I love everyone else's additions also. Pretty Woman would be #1 for me. I thought Dying Young was great, but not a comedy. Also people mentioned The Notebook and A Walk to Remember, both books written by Nicholas Sparks. He also wrote Message in a Bottle and Nights in Rodanthe. I haven't read Nights in Rodanthe or seen the movie yet. If anyone has I'd love to read a review. Another favorite of mine is Top Gun, action, adventure, romance, comedy, not sure what genre, but a fun movie, & Tom Cruise at his cutest.

GloriB313 wrote on Jun 10, 2008 at 5:32PM

Great list not one movie I would take off that list

LadyMagic wrote on May 9, 2008 at 11:12PM

Good list. I liked "Dying Young" but I wouldn't put it on alist of comedies. Too much tear factor. I've got a long list going way back to some really old flicks. Will have to give this some thought. Good review.

Great list, a have seen quite a few of them...and also yes we saw the "something about mary" at the theater, and chucked all the way home..I also like Reese Witherspoon too..

LAmommyOF2 wrote on Apr 24, 2008 at 3:29AM

i'm a big Ben Stiller fan and Something about Mary is hilarious and so is Along came Polly...But the most recent Heartbreak Kid was probably the funniest I've seen so far!!!

I agree with you. Have you ever seen "Radio" or "Mr Holland's Opus" -- perfect for a nice cry with a big bowl of ice-cream.

DeafMom wrote on Apr 18, 2008 at 7:19PM

I haven't seen half of these--I'll be sure to check out the rest!

I have to add a few you missed. Hope Floats, The Wedding Date, 4 Weddngs and a Funeral, were great too. I could go on, but those were tops.

escapegal wrote on Apr 17, 2008 at 3:53PM

Ok...here's my list: I agree with The Holiday, Clueless, The Princess Bride and Sweet Home Alabama. But I'd have to add While You Were Sleeping, 27 Dresses (I know it's new, but hasn't wanted to get drunk and karaoke Elton John???), Groundhog Day, The Wedding Planner (Matthew McConaughey, need I say more), Hope Floats, and...Heathers. Trust me on that one.

The Notebook is a great Romantic Drama but not in anyway a comedy to me. I cried almost the whole movie! I just review it too!

vivi44266 wrote on Apr 16, 2008 at 8:39AM

All of those are great movies but I would have included The Wedding Date! That was a great Romantic Comedy in my book!!! Your list is awesome!

Duckie wrote on Apr 15, 2008 at 6:24PM

I own Sweet Home Alabama and break it out just when I think my hope for a good man is gone, and while I do know that it's just a movie, it allows me to hope for the future. I happen to think that Reese Witherspoon is fabulous. I haven't seen some of the movies on your list, but they are now on my "to see" list. I do have two movies that I love and would like to suggest, Something's Gotta Give w/Jack Nicholson & Diane Keaton, and and old school favorite The Money Pit w/Tom Hanks & Shelly Long. Take Care!

rosensmiles wrote on Apr 13, 2008 at 5:30PM

Sweet Home Alabama is also at the top of my list. Wonderful review I would have to agree that they are all great movies

shadaram wrote on Apr 12, 2008 at 3:28PM

Great list, I love most of these. I really liked Just Like Heaven, even if it is a little cheesy. Speaking of "cheese", the Wedding Date is really cute, and romantic!

enatividad87 wrote on Apr 11, 2008 at 1:17AM

How about 10 Things I Hate About You? Oh and how about Grease? Those are 2 of my favorites.

Of your top 10, I've only seen one: The Princess Bride. I have seen a few romantic comedies in my lifetime, but of your list, just that one. Nice list, though.

Ahhh... American President. I loved that movie.... :) I own it and watch it every once in a while. I am a big Annette Benning fan. I also liked American Beauty-- but that isnt a romantic comedy.

bkovacs wrote on Apr 7, 2008 at 10:32AM

I agree with a couple of choices but others are way off. Apparently, I'm the only person who thought "Love, Actually" was lousy. Some other films cited below are dramas, not comedies ("An Officer and a Gentleman," "The Notebook," etc.). They are good movies, just not romantic comedies. You could include "The Witness" in that category, as it is a thriller with a great romance... but not a comedy. Romantic comedies you should consider are "The Goodbye Girl," "The Wedding Singer," "Sliding Doors," "Sleepless in Seattle," "Dave," "The American President" and "Bridget Jones Diary." There are many others, especially if you go back 30-60 years.

Nice review!

Very interesting! I have a few of these favorites in common with you (Love Actually, Sweet Home Alabama & Pretty Woman) but I think we diverse from there. You are not alone- I saw and enjoyed Dying Young as well. It was one of those movies that 10 people said don't watch and so I had to & really liked it. Thanks for writing this fun review:)

Those are great pics but my wife Dee and I have a few different ones on our list: The Notebook, The Holiday, A Walk in the Clouds, While You Were Sleeping, Sweet Home Alabama, How to Lose a Guy in 10 days, Pretty Woman, Just Like Heaven, You've Got Mail, and 50 First Dates.

sga7652664 wrote on Apr 3, 2008 at 7:54PM

Great Pics, I also like Notting Hill!

PattyTherre wrote on Apr 3, 2008 at 7:00PM

I think I only saw Pretty Woman out of all of these. I have the strangest tastes in movies. I am going to be writing my top hot picks soon. People will wonder why I think certain mainstream movies are romantic but like I said, I have strange tastes. Great list! I enjoyed reading it,

danmilstead wrote on Apr 3, 2008 at 9:36AM

I agree with some of your picks, Sweet Home Alabama, Just Like Heaven, I like Reese too, Pretty Woman. I am not too fond of The Holiday, but the best movie in this category I would like to add is Ghost. I love Demi. Another one, a more recent one, No Reservation, with Catherine Zeta Jones. The Notebook, 50 First Dates, funny and "sweet". I might be able to assist you in the Action category as well.

You are right. Dying Young is more romantic and less comedy. I will make that notation. No-- I havent seen Truly, Madly, Deeply. I will definitely add that to my list.

MikeMaroon wrote on Apr 2, 2008 at 9:58PM

I'm a closet romantic comedy watcher. But, as a dude, if you out me, I'll deny it, say you hacked my profile and put this comment here, m'kay? One of my personal favorites is "What Women Want", oh, and "Sleepless in Seattle", and "You've Got Mail", and "50 First Dates", ....and......

kid-kansas wrote on Apr 2, 2008 at 9:13PM

Some real winners you got there! Dying Young was a great movie, it had me from the get go ;)

Luvs2ShopAlot wrote on Apr 2, 2008 at 6:58PM

Also, there is A Walk to Remember with Mandy Moore. Sigh. . .

Luvs2ShopAlot wrote on Apr 2, 2008 at 6:56PM

But you forgot An Officer and a Gentleman with Richard Gere and Debra Winger. I bawl my eyes out at the end, every single time. . .

Telpher wrote on Apr 2, 2008 at 4:58PM

I didn't know how much I liked romantic comedies until I read your list, and recognized some titles I really, really like (Love, Actually!!!) But Dying Young? Not a comedy! It's a tear-jerker of the highest order!

Have you seen Truly, Madly, Deeply? If not - do so. And make sure you have a box of tissue.
