Okay, so I am not a big television fan. I dont like using television as my babysitter. My kids get to watch 30 minutes of television per day- max. They have the option during that time to watch a Walt Disney movie or to watch Sesame street. Guess which one they choose?!

Over the last 6 months I have gotten to rewatch all the disney classic movies as well as to watch the new Disney movies. Below is my "best of" list of Disney movies and Disney characters. I will highlight my top 5 and then tell you all the others that I think are worth rewatching yourself.

My top Disney Movies

1. Toy Story- Wow is this movie creative! The story is about a little boys toys that come to life. Woody, the favorite toy is worried about getting demoted to a less important toy because of the introduction of Buzz light year. The characters are adorable and the storyline is so well developed. Buzz Light Year and Woody are two of my favorite Disney Characters. Toy Story 2 is also a great movie.

2. Finding Nemo. Perhaps the BEST DISNEY MOVIE ever in my opinion. Nemo is about a father and son fish that are separated when the son didn't listen to his Dad. The rest of the movie is the dad's journey to find his son, "Nemo". Dorey the forgetful fish (Ellen Degeneres) is Dad's companion who helps him find Nemo. She is a forgetful fish and definitely one of my favorite Disney characters! I crack up every time I see this movie. Note: some parents of toddlers think there are scary parts to this movie- specifically the shark part and chase. So, if you have little ones that get scared easily, beware. For a point of reference, my kids own this and my Dad owns this too. It is perfect for children and adults alike.

3. Little Mermaid. This is a great story of a mermaid, Ariel, that wants to be with a human boy. My favorite Disney character, however, in this movie is Sebastian and the crab. The music is magical and so catchy. My daughter loves the Little Mermaid because she looks like mommy. It is nice to have a "princess" that isnt necessary a blond. :)

4. Monsters, Inc. If you have not seen this Disney movie, rent it now!!! Monsters Inc is a close second to Finding Nemo in my opinion. One of the best Disney movies. Want to talk about creative? You dont get more creative than this! And, for those worried about scary-- no worries here. I think toddlers are fine. The storyline is about a power producing company that is driven from scaring children. It is fed off childrens screams. The Disney characters Mike, Sully and Boo are so great. My kids live for this movie!

5. Enchanted- one of the new Disney movies- came out last year. Amy Adams and Patrick Demsey are adorable in this real-life fairytale of finding true love. Enchanted was a creative and fun movie. They do such a great job at migrating from characters to "real people". The music in the movie is also quite enchanting. See my full review.

Other Top Disney movies that are a close second:

1. The Incredibles. I think the Incredibles is more geared toward a grammar school child. However, it definitely makes it up there as one of the best and most creative disney movies.

2. Lion King. Who doesnt know this movie? It is in the movies, a broadway staple and has such magical music. A koon-a-mat-ta? A Disney classic. How do you spell that anyway?

3. Beauty & the Beast. I love Angela Lansbury in this movie. The characters and songs are so great. We also saw this on Broadway and it was fabulous. Disney at it's best.

4. Cinderella. The classic Disney movie that everyone loves. How is it that every boy and girl love this movie? When I rewatched it for the first time I thought it was so slow moving. But it has really grown on me again to be a magical fairytale.

Other Disney Movies worth watching, but dont make it on my favorite list:

1. Bugs Life. My kids love the grasshopper part but other toddlers I know are scared by many of the scenes. Kevin Spacy is the grasshopper.

2. Alice in Wonderland. Very creative but definitely a little trippy for me. Were they on acid when making this movie?

3. SnowWhite. The classic Disney movies can be a little scary and ruthless. This is one example. The forest scene scares my kids.

4. Sleeping Beauty. A Disney Classic worth seeing again.

5. Pinnochio. Another Disney classic that sucks you in almost instantly.

So, that's my take on Disney movies.... What Walt Disney movies do you like?

Next on my watch list:

I really need to see Mary Poppins again. I havent seen that in about 30 years. And, I have to see Peter Man. Finding Neverland reminded me that I want to watch it.

Our favorites include some of yours but I would say as babies both my boys found "Dumbo" to be their favorite. Beauty & the Beast awesome, Mary Poppins - you must see it again!, Monsters, Inc. and Cars for new ones. Now, here's a suggestion for some you may like that you may not have seen - 2 Davy Crockets, Close to my Heart, the original Herbie movies- Love Bug, Homeward Bound (I & II) , Old Yeller, and yes - watch Peter Pan again...my boys loved that too!

Count me in as one of the Cinderalla fanatics. I LOVE that one! Great songs! Cute mice! Step sisters who get their just desserts in the end! And it holds up, even after all this time. Love it.

Finding Nemo: "BEST DISNEY MOVIE ever" Yep! Only, wasn't it that last of Pixar's, before the merge? And, yeah, I'd have to put Monster's Inc. second on this list too. In fact, ever since my guy and I watched it, he calls me Boo - after the girl in the film. Weird at first because most people think of the nickname otherwise (overused by others I know), but I love it!

Great Picks, Jolie! I would have a difficult time picking out my top 5. We just saw Enchanted and I'm not sure if that would make my list, though. Mary Poppins is a classic and terrific movie. Want a real wake-up call? Have you read the real Peter Pan story? Wow..quite a bit different than the Disney version and actually a bit scary. I remember reading the book to my son years ago when he was going to sleep and I had to stop reading it because that cute little fairy was so wicked! :-) Great review! Dave

I like the old versions better.

Good list. Now these 2 aren't animated, but I love Pollyanna and the original Parent Trap. They are so fun to watch. Beauty & the Beast is my favorite animated movie!

Yeah, I think "Cars" is one of the least of the Pixar movies, but still better than a whole lot of crap that's out there. My favorites are the Toy Story movies.

LisaCarey wrote on May 15, 2008 at 1:31PM

Oh my girls change everyday . . . I guess that's what I get for having only girls! but basically cars and enchanted are the current favorites.

We kids like "mater" too (aka Cars), but do you like that movie? I think it is so-so. Ah, Aladdin. That is a good one too! There are too many Disney movies!

MikeMaroon wrote on May 15, 2008 at 11:16AM

My little one LOVES Aladdin! And she has to have her "Mater".
