It’s important to me to have Christian books in my children’s library. I wanted to share four of our family’s favorites for anyone that is hoping to add to their own library or searching for a special gift.

The Princess & the Kiss: A Story of God’s Gift of Purity by Jennie Bishop
(Standard Publishing, 2004)

We received this book as a gift and it has become a treasure. This is a touching story about a princess who saves her first kiss and wonders if she will ever find one worthy of this precious gift. The answer is both surprising and joyful!

Jennie Bishop has created a whole new image of “happily ever after.” My daughter asks for this one often and this story has a message I am so happy to read.

The Squire & the Scroll by Jennie Bishop
(Warner Press, 2004)

We loved The Princess & the Kiss so much that we had to buy The Squire & the Scroll for our son. This story appeals to the adventurer as a young squire travels along side a brave knight on a dangerous quest. The young squire gleans understanding of facing temptation and the importance of guarding his heart.

Again, Jennie Bishop has embedded the important message in an adventure kids are drawn to and will ask to read over and over.

I’d Be Your Princess: A Royal Tale of Godly Character by Kathryn O’Brien
(Standard Publishing, 2003)

Kathryn O’Brien is another Christian children’s book author that our family has embraced. In I’d Be Your Princess a little girl dreams of a life as a princess and her father playfully points out Godley qualities in each of her royal quests.

This story is not at all “preachy.” It presents valuable messages within a kid-attractive, fun story. This is one of those books that parents actually enjoy reading. It’s a warm, fuzzy, smiley kind of book.

I’d Be Your Hero: A Royal Tale of Godly Character by Kathryn O’Brien
(Standard Publishing, 2005)

In I’d Be Your Hero, a young boy shares with his mother imaginative adventures of being a hero complete with tournaments and feasts. All along the way, his mother highlights the Godley qualities embedded in each of his endeavors.

I can say first hand this book is a favorite for many, many children. The illustrations by Michael Garland are so fun and friendly.

Each of these books are recommended for children ages 4-8 but I can attest that each of them are enjoyed by older children as well. They are all great stepping-stones for conversations about character and values as children grow. While each appears to be “for a girl” or “for a boy,” all are great additions to any family library and are enjoyed by both princesses and young heroes.

These books are all available in hardcover at Christian bookstores, Barnes & Noble and on Amazon.com for around $12.00. I’d Be Your Hero and I’d Be Your Princess are also available as board books for $6.99 at Amazon.com.

But how can I choose you ask? I am glad we were eventually able to collect them all but if you need to make a choice, this would be my advice. For children six and under, go with the Kathryn O’Brien books I’d Be Your Princess & I’d Be Your Hero. For over six, I’d choose the books by Jennie Bishop, The Princess and the Kiss & and The Young Squire.

As a parent, I have been delighted when my children received these Christian books as gifts and have felt good about buying them as gifts. Whatever your selections, happy reading!

I hope you will accept my book review. We received a book called Archy the Flying Dolphin, by a very well written author named Alan Williams.
My son received it for his 6th birthday and he adores this book so much.
My sister, the one who got it for him, is so thrilled how much he's into it. She was a little worried it may be too old for him I guess, but he brought it to show and tell at school and all the kids loved it, so she really liked to hear that. I think it's great to give children's books for gifts...I'm so thrilled he got a book that we can all enjoy!
