With the news that the film Risky Business is celebrating it's 25th anniversary next week, I wondered if this was one I should share with my 15 year old son. I've been sharing some of my favorite 80s flicks with him since he was young. But this one, I'm just not sure of. Don't get me wrong, I realize he's well aware of the existence of prostitutes, but I'm just not sure this is something I should be sharing with him. While I consider this further, here's a list of the other 80s flicks I've shared with him. Some I have shared with my daughter as well, but at 11 years old, she isn't ready for some of them yet.

1. Sixteen Candles
One of my son's and my favorite things to do watching movies together is to quote the one-liners. There can't be any better film from this genre that fits this purpose than Sixteen Candles. I can't even tell you how many times we look at each other each week and repeat, "No, he's not retarded!" Besides, it makes a great coming of age film for kids, as do most John Hughes films.

2. Back to the Future
This was the first 80s flick I shared with my son. He loves sci-fi, and I knew he'd like this one. We even gathered inspirational messages from this movie, such as "You can do anything you set your mind to." It started him out on a path of being a huge Michael J. Fox fan, as he's seen many of his films, not to mention the two Back to the Future sequels.

3. The Breakfast Club
There's no better off film than this one to show kids that it's okay to not be just like everyone else. It's also a realistic film of social activity in high school, even twenty-something years later. Again, we like to repeat the one-liners, and he has the whole scene memorized where Judd Nelson acts out what it must be like in Anthony Michael Hall's house. "Hey Son, let's go fishing this weekend!" "Oh gee, Dad, I can't. I have homework to do." "Hey, I know! You can do it on the boat!"

4. National Lampoon's Vacation

Like most families, we've done the road trip vacations, and there's always great stories to come out of each one, making it a good time to share National Lampoon's Vacation. Chevy Chase is brilliant in this, as he is in the other National Lampoon movies, all of which we've seen together (Christmas Vacation, European Vacation, and Vegas Vacation.) Every family can relate to it.

5. Better Off Dead
It's a John Cusack classic, and he was great at playing those oddball high school guys that didn't quite fit in. Once again, it's great with the one-liners of, "Christmas!" (have to say it while someone is pinching your mouth) and "I want my two dollars!" This movie probably didn't get near the recognition it should have.

6. Real Genius
My son has always been in accelerated and challenge classes at school, and Real Genius, about a school for gifted kids, was always one of my husband's and my favorites, so I knew I wanted to share it with our son. It's just something he relates to, knowing what those kids go through, yet you don't have to be in challenge classes for it to be just a really good movie. You just have to love Val Kilmer's 'tude in this.

7. Karate Kid
Karate Kid happened to be what my husband and I saw on our first date, and now with myself and my two kids all involved in martial arts, it makes a perfect film for the three of us to enjoy together, as we actually know what he's really doing with the wax on/wax off.

8. Pee-wee's Big Adventure
Okay, how can you not share this with kids? The humor that we find so funny goes right over their heads, and there's still humor in there fit for kids that they enjoy as well. It's one of those things that has different levels, and through the years, kids understand different parts. We haven't seen this in a long time, but maybe now that he's 15 and would understand more of it, it's time to revisit it.

Films I've Been Meaning to Share But Haven't Gotten to Yet

1. Valley Girl

I have always loved this film, and I know my son would enjoy it as well. Nicholas Cage was just brilliant, especially considering it was one of his first films. He was a different kind of guy in this film, so different than the valley girls, and I have always thought it had a good message for kids that it doesn't matter where you come from. Being R rated, though, it's probably a good thing I waited until now.

2. Pretty In Pink
Yet another John Hughes flick with Molly Ringwald. Despite the name, it doesn't even have to be a chick flick. It's yet another film dealing with people that don't fit in the in crowd, especially Molly's friend, Ducky, played by Jon Cryer, way before his time as one of the whole men in Two and a Half Men.

3. The Outsiders
It's a great male bonding film, and the names alone, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, and C. Thomas Howell tell you it's one to see.

Wow, another good one I forgot! Both Goonies and Gremlins are ones we've watched together. My son even has Goonies on DVD.
