Beowulf (2007) — 

Okay, let's get this out of the way:
  • Gore - check.
  • Violence - check.
  • Nudity? So some have said, but really, no. Angelina's character is painted in gold. The men are wearing loin cloths in battle, and Beowulf is naked at one point, but in an Austin Powers comedic prop method, we see no genitalia. (We do see a very gorgeous warrior played by Ray Winstone.)
Now, the cast is excellent. Anthony Hopkins, Crispin Glover as Grendel ( I thought I recognized those screams!), Robin Wright Penn, John Malkovich... The animation often gives way to the acting skills of this cast. Yet, when broad scenes of fantasy or battle are needed, the animation does what live action cannot: bring this world into ours.

I saw this film in 3D at the IMAX theater. Highly recommended, altough I will be buying the non-3D DVD when it is released. It was a sad surprise to me to learn how many people were infamiliar with the tale of Beowulf - one of our oldest written literature, and rich with themes that continue to influence modern writing. Wonderful adaptation!
