While I'm not familiar with the literary work of Beowulf, I'm pretty sure this film wouldn't hold a candle to it. Eye-popping animation was generally very good, with eye-popping imagery and a very realistic hero. However, the plot didn't allow for the audience to care about Beowulf, and that's what makes a movie great.

The realism of the landscapes and the beautiful detailing in the armor contrasted with the lack of emotion in the eyes of the leading characters. My familiarity with horses also didn't allow me to believe in the very poorly gaited steeds they animated for the film. However, the animation avoided the hyper-speed streaking that we all forgave them for in the Spiderman film.

Some moments of movie magic help elevate Beowulf. The seductive tone of the scenes featuring Grendel's mother silenced our almost-empty theater. In contrast, the fight scenes were a joyous romp through the drinking hall.

Quality actors came to the recording booth to offer their skills. Anthony Hopkins was his usual excellency, but the accents taken on by Angelina Jolie and Crispin Glover (Grendel) were not their best work -- and nearly unintelligible.

In the end, when presented with the question of whether the remaining protagonist will take the high road or not, I just didn't care what would happen next. The characters were not particularly noble, which is something I expected.

Beowulf is no Gladiator. It's not even 300 when it comes to storyline. But the eye candy factor saves this one and I give it an above-average rating.
