Beowulf (2007) Review

My husband and I went a couple weeks ago to see this movie.

My first impression, the graphics are AMAZING - you forget that you are watching animated characters.

It was extremely violent, however.  My husband and I don't watch rated R films, but we honestly felt this could have qualified as one.  I wonder if the PG 13 rating was justified by the fact that it was "simulated gore" - not using live-action people.  If that's the case, it makes no sense to me, since the gore on live-action films isn't real either.  And considering that this film was so realistic, it should still count.

There was also a lot of nudity and sexual innuendos for a PG 13, I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable bringing a 13-year-old to this movie that is not used to seeing such things (I do realize there are kids that age who watch worse than that, but they're not who I am referring to).

 As for story and plot - I forgot most of what I studied about the Beowulf poem in High School, so I can't recall how accurate it was.  The story-line wasn't bad.  I'll try not to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, so I won't elaborate.  I will say though that I was dissappointed with how it ended.  **OK, I guess this is a spoiler coming up - I wanted to believe that the new King was on to the water demon's tricks and would toss the horn away, sneer at her and walk away.  Instead it just ended with a sort of staring contest between the two of them, with him still holding the horn, as if he was contemplating on whether she was worth it.  And then BOOM, cut to credits.  Arrrghh!  I hate endings like that! - END OF SPOILER**

So, I guess I wasn't very impressed, huh?  Again, the animation was incredible.  I do still wonder why Beowulf looked exactly like Sean Bean, but then he wasn't the voice behind the character.  From what I have learned, all the characters resemble their voice actors except for him.  I wonder if Sean Bean was the original choice for Beowulf?
