Quick View: I totally believe in foundation primer. Without it, my makeup wears off really fast and I look pale and sickly. I have a couple of favorites but couldn't resists Benefit's The Gal because it was so different and promised so much. Oops, I did it again. I fell for the hype and ended up disappointed.
About Benefit Cosmetics That Gal Brightening Face Primer
Here is what Benefit has to say about this primer:
Go from dull to darling with "that gal." It's a silky pink primer that makes skin appear smoother & brighter. Wear alone for clear complexion radiance or apply before makeup for smooth, effortless application. Re-brighten during the day with "that gal." It's "that gal" perfection for a happy complexion.
This primer comes in a .37 ounce stick and is pink. Most primers are clear. The stick swivels up and the primer is creamy. Just a little is needed on a bare face. It actually does make my skin a bit pink. I am not a big fan of pink faces. I like a little glow but priming my face with a pink cream looks weird. I dot the primer on and then spread it across my face evenly. My skin does feel softer and looks a bit more even but that pink hue isn't appealing to me. When I apply my foundation, the pink does tone down and I don't look like a burn victim, thankfully. However, after my makeup is applied, I don't see much difference in my overall look. I look the same as I always do.
My makeup wears about the same amount of time as with cheaper primers. Longer than with none, shorter than with my favorites (Smashbox, Sephora, and Philosophy's The Present). I never use the primer over make up to "brighten up" my face. If I want a pink glow, I will use Benefit's Dandelion Face Powder which gives a pretty, fresh glow that is super subtle.
This primer is really very average and doesn't do anything that drugstore primers can't. It's expensive at $27.00 for a very small amount and I just didn't see anything that was so good that I would repurchase this. It's not terrible. It's just not great and not worth the high price tag.
My Viewpoint
This primer is average but costs way too much to get away with that. It's not bad but not great. 3 stars. I don't recommend it. Primers are the start of a beautiful complexion and I don't feel this one makes my complexion beautiful like the others I use.
