Earlier this year I was wandering around the drugstore waiting for a prescription to be filled. I was on my way home from the doctor's office, I was sick, and I was feeling sorry for myself which tends to make me very vulnerable to filling up my shopping basket with things that will make me feel better. On this particular day I picked up many bath and beauty items hoping it would help.
One of those items was an exfoliating scrub that I thought would work great on the rhinoceros feet that I had developed over the dreadful Michigan winter months. After soaking in a hot bath and using the scrub all over my feet, they felt great, I felt better and I fell sound asleep in my warm bed.
Only to wake up in the middle of the night with my feet on fire! They were hot and red and so itchy I could barely stand it. I got out of bed and read the ingredients on that tube of scrub and found the culprit - walnut shells. I'm allergic to walnuts! Not deathly allergic or anything. It's just that if I eat them, the inside of my mouth gets all itchy within a few minutes and the itchies last for about an hour afterwards. But in the case of my feet I scrubbed and rubbed and scrubbed some more and ground those shells right into my skin.
I called the toll free nurse line that my insurance company offers and the nurse suggested Benadryl capsules by mouth and Benadryl spray applied topically. Well I had never heard of Benadryl spray but I sent my husband out to the 24 hour Walgreen's (he was just thrilled to go there at 3am on a Tuesday) to retrieve the spray.
Thankfully the store carries this product as it truly saved me. I only took the oral Benadryl one or two times but they make me very sleepy so I mostly used the spray and it worked great. I had to use the spray several times a day for several days but it's the only thing that really worked. The spray is a bit sticky on the skin and it also stings somewhat at first as it is alcohol based but it really helped to decrease the itching and irritation. It's good stuff!
