Benadryl Allergy Medicine —

I grew up in Ohio and went through the pain of annual scratch tests and weekly allergy shots all through my childhood and teen years. By the time I left home for college, I felt like I'd had more than enough allergy shots to last a lifetime. I moved to Arizona for college and had a blissful couple of years with next to no allergies at all! Then slowly but surely all of those allergy symptoms started creeping back. I went to the allergist, had test spots all up and down my arms with only three spots that didn't respond. It turned out to be the test spots where they'd only used saline. The good news was that I wasn't hypersensitive to things like dust, mold and ragweed anymore. The bad news was that the southwest is home to lots of new allergens like tumbleweed and olive trees. During the daytime I use a nondrowsy formula like Zantec but on high allergy days Benadryl relieves my symptoms and lets me sleep through the night. I've since developed food allergies to seafood and avocados and keep Benadryl in my purse to quickly stop hives from food allergies (you'd be surprised how many restaurant meals have some sort of seafood in dressings or sauces). The primary downside to Benadryl is that I can't stay awake after taking it unless I consume ridiculous quantities of caffeine. For bedtime relief or to effectively stop hives, this works the best.
