When I set up the wireless connection in our current house, I had to go through the process of purchasing both a wireless device and a router to get it all started. The router that I went with was the Belkin Wireless-G Router with a 4-Port Switch that was on special at the local Best Buy. Compact and almost indiscreet, it seemed like a good option, and at the price I had to pay for it, this router seemed like a really good deal. Having used numerous Belkin computer products in the past, it didn't seem like much of a risk, and nearly two years after I bought the router, it is still working splendidly.
Having a router is necessary if you are going to go the wireless route in your house, and it allows you to create a network without having all of your devices hooked up by cables. This allows you to have laptops around the house, and to not have to worry about where you are in the house to get a good connection. With a 2 story house, we can be anywhere in the house, and still receive a good internet connection (4 or 5 bars at all times). Having the router in the basement allows freedom for all the other wireless devices in the house, and the only work needed is to log on to our network while the router is working.
Now the capabilities of this router are its provided speed of up to 54 Mbps, the ability to connect 4 devices physically, and that it has auto-detection for other devices in the area. You can use it to set up a private network within the house, so that you are protected from roaming neighbors, and it is designed to work extremely fast. As one of the "g" series it works 5 times faster than your standard router, and it already comes with the ethernet switch that will allow your computers to connect to your network quickly. Most of the time we have three computers on this single router, and almost always get really good results. Every once in a while I will have to re-set the router to maintain a high level of speed, but that is a really small price to pay since it is so far between re-sets.
Right out of the box, this router is easy to set up using the software (CD) included in the box, and it is as simple as going through a few steps to set up your primary computer. Then you can start logging all your other wireless devices on to your personal server, and go to town with your new internet connection. This router says that it has up to a 400 foot range, and I think it works a little bit further than that under the right conditions. It is also workable through both Macs and PC's, and is just as easy to set up with both systems. For provided safety it helps set up a firewall to protect you from hackers, and protects your data using its own encryption methods. So, you are operating under a safe system with this router, receiving quick response from your connections, and using the internet with barely any effort should you purchase one of these Belkin Routers. Currently selling for right around $40.00, I would say that is a steal for this great Belkin product.
